Message from the Headmaster

It was good to get back to school on Wednesday even though I apologize for the Headmaster’s thoughtless scheduling that required people to travel on New Year’s Day.  His family has made him promise never to schedule that way again.  We had a busy holiday at North Cross, and the new year has seen significant upgrades and improvements.

On the security front, we immediately began pulling the cable that is necessary for our intercom system, our card access doors, and our entry video system.  We have installed a warning siren that can be heard in all of our outdoor spaces.  To date, we are ahead of schedule and are now awaiting the delivery of the hardware.  Once this arrives, United Security will begin installation of the swipe card locks, video cameras, and intercoms immediately.  In the meantime, we have scheduled a full faculty meeting for Monday afternoon to discuss lockdown procedures and we will do a walk-through with students mid-week. This is a walk-through, not a drill, and is designed to acquaint students with procedures in a calm fashion.  We will quickly follow up our walk-through with an actual drill that places an emphasis on speed.  There will be more on this in a specific email next week.

We also have a new website which I hope you will visit.  It reflects what we felt was most needed by our current parent population as well parents of prospective students.  I am most pleased with the effort.  Importantly, the new website is about one third the size of our previous website and is much more user friendly.  Jeff Kennard has been assigned as a webmaster and he will spend time each day keeping information current.  If you find an error, please contact him and it will be changed immediately!  It is good to finally have an easy-to-use calendar of school events.

Parents were also sent information on NetClassroom, an Internet site that allows parents to check on student grades.  This site is dependent upon our teachers uploading grade data in a timely fashion and we have worked very hard to create this habit.  Teachers have been uploading grades since the beginning of the trimester so when you log on, you should see all of your child’s grades since Thanksgiving.  If you have trouble accessing NetClassroom or have not received your username and password, do not hesitate to call the school.  Our IT people can help you out.

Again, it is good to have everyone back again.

Winter Book Fair for Ellis Hall

Our first Barefoot Books Winter Book Fair will be held on Thursday, January 31 and Friday, February 1, in Hancock Library.  Elizabeth (Weaver) Hale is a 1991 graduate of North Cross School and is a Barefoot Books ambassador. We are very excited to be working with her to bring this wonderful selection of books to our school! Barefoot books is an award-winning independent children's book publisher, and we believe you will appreciate their emphasis on imagination, creativity, diversity, and community. Please take a look at their website, www.barefootbooks.com, where you can find not only the selection of books they offer, but also information about this company's mission and core values, activities and songs that you can download, and literacy information as well. This special Winter Book Fair is being held for our lower school students, but we hope parents with students in middle and upper school will also stop by to take a look! Please be on the lookout for more information in the next few weeks!

Boys Varsity Soccer Earns National Honor from MaxPreps
