Tim Sheldan new Deputy Minister, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO)
We would like to welcome Tim Sheldan as the new Deputy Minister, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO). Tim is not new to the BC Public Service having served as Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations Division and prior to that, as Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations and BC Timber Sales. He recently was the Director General of the Northern Forestry Centre, Natural Resources Canada, in Edmonton. Tim will take over as Deputy Minister at FLNRO on October 9
th. We look forward to working with Tim to ensure the continued success of community forestry in BC.
Geoff Klassen, new Timber Tenures Forester
We would also like to welcome Geoff Klassen, the new Timber Tenures Forester, working in Victoria under the direction of Peter Graff, Senior Timber Tenures Forester. Geoff started work in August and will be involved in a number of initiatives to administer and support B.C.’s small area‐based forest tenures: Community Forest Agreements, Woodlot Licences, and First Nations Woodland Licences.
Geoff will participate in the monthly Joint Working Group calls that include key ministry staff and the BCCFA Executive Director and the executive members of the Board.
The Softwood Lumber Trade Dispute and the Future of BC Forest Policy - Public Lecture October 24 at UBC
In this UBC Faculty of Forestry program, representatives of the US Lumber Coalition will explain what they perceive to be the problematic aspects of BC forest policy.

Major Milestone: A New Path to become a Registered Professional Forester (RPF)
The Master of Sustainable Forest Management (MSFM) program at UBC has just been accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board for the next 6 years, retroactive to August 2012. This is a major milestone in the development and implementation of this new course-based Master’s program, and a first for forestry graduate programs in Canada. MSFM program graduates can to apply to become an RPF with member agencies of the Canadian Federation of Professional of Professional Foresters Associations (CFPFA), including the Association of BC Professional Foresters. The program has already been acknowledged with success with the graduates of the class of 2013 all having found employment.

Webinar - Canada's Forest Sector Snapshot 2013 - October 24
This webinar will present the findings of a national survey, that the Canadian Model Forest Network (CMFN) undertook of its forest industry partners and collaborators. The objective of the survey was to ask those directly involved and impacted by the forest sector, what the issues and barriers are. The three biggest issues that will be discussed are on topics of: skills and labour, low-grade timber products, social license and policy.
