Your Stories......Commemorating the Great War

We loved this story from Jacqui Cotterill from Harbledown, Kent, who chose to use her new Bernina 350 PE to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One.

Inspired by a series of events to mark the centenary and the role played by the the men of the village, Jacqui decided to test her newly-found quilting skills to visually portray The Great War as a quilt, looking like the fields of Britain. She has used ex-military uniforms, mainly shirts cut into 5" squares., as well as pockets and epaulettes. In one of the centre large squares is a copy of the last letter a man wrote from the front. He died soon afterwards and is commemorated on the village War Memorial. His letter is tucked under the flap of a pocket with an envelope addressed to him and The Buffs ensignia sewed onto the pocket flap. There is a square of plain cream cotton embroidered by the ladies of the village with the name of each man from Harbledown who fell in World War One. This includes all the men named on the war memorial and those for various reasons who were not included. Around the edge of the quilt on the binding Jacqui programmed her Bernina to embroider the poem 'In Flanders Fields' by Major John McCrae.

We think it’s an amazing and fitting tribute to all those who served and thank Jacqui for sharing it with us.

Bernina launches its fastest sewing machine onto UK market

Bernina has introduced its fastest sewing machine onto the UK market with the launch of the Bernina 880.

The machine, whose innovative new features include shaping, colour wheel and the distinctive Stitch Designer, has more built-in stitch patterns and embroidery designs to choose from than ever before. It also offers 400 built-in embroidery designs, as well as the ability to create unique embroidery designs and adjust their colour before embroidering begins. In addition, the 880 has a large bobbin with 80% more thread capacity than standard bobbins. The 880 is available from authorised Bernina dealers throughout the UK.

The Bernina 880 boasts plenty of space, with a full 12 inches to the right of the needle for sewing and jumbo embroidery, and a sewing speed of 1,200 stitches per minute. Sewers can choose from 1,764 built-in stitches, modify those stitches, or create their own stitch pattern with the new Stitch Designer. Users can draw their own stitches on the 880's touch screen and in one click, convert them into a stitch pattern. In addition, the 880's embroidery designs can be duplicated and arranged into any desired formation with the new Shaping feature. Embroidery colours can also be manipulated with the new Colour Wheel, allowing users to easily co-ordinate colour schemes. Other features include the Bernina Dual Feed and Bernina Stitch Regulator (BSR).
