Persistence in Prayer

I think it’s fair to say that everyone in my family is pretty good at expressing their emotions. The other morning I was quietly working in my bedroom when I heard deep sobbing coming from Sherie in the living room. My first reaction was that something was very wrong - and so I went to get up and check if she was okay, but then those deep crying sobs suddenly changed to become deep belly laughing. Now I really wanted to know what was going on.

I headed out into the living room to hear Sherie tell me the news. A long term friend of ours had been praying for a baby for many, many years, but had been unable to fall pregnant. Doctors had told her straight out that she would never be able to conceive. Yet the news that Sherie told me through those belly laughs was that our friend & her husband were indeed going to have a baby.

Those tears of joy that we shed that day came about as a natural response to God’s answer to prayer. He had indeed heard the many prayers, He had worked in their lives, and He had done what the doctors said could never happen. This was a direct answer to prayer, and we couldn’t help but rejoice in that moment - rejoice in the goodness of God, in His faithfulness, and his divine power.

In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells the parable of a widow who continually pesters an unrighteous judge with her requests for justice to the point that he eventually gives her what she wants just to shut her up. Jesus then reminds us how much more our Heavenly Father who is righteous will “bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night” (Luke 18:7).

May we remain faithful in our prayers to God. Let’s not stop asking for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done on Earth through our ongoing prayers. May we seek Him and not just what we want from Him, because He is our faithful, loving Father who wants us to bring our requests before Him. And may we in turn rejoice and praise God through our prayers when we see him move and answer prayers in His timing, His might, and His way.
