Maestro George Hanson:
Prepare for a “deep dive”
into Beethoven’s Ninth

Dear Friends of Sunriver Music Festival,

If you are like me, right now you are finding yourself with a bit more time on your hands! I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the process of how musicians in general, and conductors in particular, prepare for the performance of a great work.

As you know, this summer Sunriver Music Festival is celebrating Beethoven’s 250th birthday. This August, in my tenth and final year as music director at the Festival, we will present many of Beethoven's most important music, culminating in one of the greatest works of art in the history of Western Civilization:  Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Those of us privileged to participate in a lifetime of many performances of this great work have an inside view of how it connects us to each other as human beings. We performers devote months or even years of our lives to come to understand a work of this magnitude. I would like to share my thoughts and insights into this profound artistic endeavor.

Over the coming days I will create audio and video packages examining how I prepare for a monumental project like this summer’s festival, with three of Beethoven’s greatest symphonic works, focusing on the Ninth. If you like the idea of exploring in depth some of the great works of art that you will hear this summer, please share these emails with your friends!

Most of all, I want you to support the Festival by making a commitment to membership and donate NOW. Music is playing a huge role in our ability to confront today’s challenges. When we emerge from today’s crisis together, we will need our musical organizations to be there for us, ready to bring us back together and take us to the next level. That doesn’t happen without your support.

As an introduction to this project, have a listen to this video of individual musicians celebrating their love of music, and Beethoven. Let’s dive in together, into the greatness of our art form. Join us!

Thank you,

George Hanson

P.S.  If you can get through this video and not sob with sheer joy, I’m not sure we can help you..
