Boomerang bags reach 2000
Boomerang bags were launched in Kyneton in August last year, and just five months later there have been more than 2000 bags made and distributed to the community.

The colourful and distinctive fabric bags are regularly spotted being used around town so we're happy to know each one is replacing many single-use plastic bags.

Many groups and individuals in the community have helped with this achievement. Kyneton Transition Hub partnered with Kyneton Community and Learning Centre (KCLC) for this project and they have provided a sewing bee venue, storage and lots of other help. Both RM Begg and BUPA have welcomed our volunteers for sewing bees and the volunteers and residents have had lots of fun times together. Kyneton Men's Shed, CWA Twilighters, Kyneton Show Committee, Kyneton Connections and Kyneton Library have all provided support along with many other local schools and groups. The local op shops have helped immensely in providing fabric donations. KTH and MRSC provided initial funding to purchase equipment and service donated machines.

Of course, the project is an ongoing one and although we have a bunch of dedicated volunteers we're always looking for new ones. You don't need to be able to sew to get involved as there are lots of other jobs. And we've had a few people join so we can help them learn to sew. The "sewing" bees will continue and all comers are welcome. This includes all ages and all abilities.

We also have volunteers who collect kits of bags already cut out and do their sewing at home. You can collect kits from Kyneton Community & Learning Centre or the produce swap at the farmers' market.

Sewing bees are held regularly at BUPA, RM Begg and KCLC and occasionally at other venues. We plan school holiday events as well.

If you would prefer to help behind the scenes contact us about joining our steering group which meets only as required. This group has a number of roles: encouraging others; liaising with local schools, community groups, shops and businesses; organising fabric donations; promoting this initiative.

For more information find us on Facebook, email or call KCLC on 5422 3433.
If you're using our boomerang bags, remember they belong to the community so please make sure you take them with you to use again or return them to one of the stores.

The important thing is for them to get used many times as each time they take the place of a single-use plastic bag.
Community News...
Vision for Kyneton Forum -
Thursday 1st March
Business Kyneton with support from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council is hosting a community forum and is inviting local businesses, community and sporting groups, schools, residents and other interested parties.

The first community consultation is aimed at opening a conversation and assessing and prioritising what the community’s wants and needs are into the future.

The meeting will be held at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute 7pm on Thursday 1st March.

“This will be the first step of the process and will provide opportunities to participate in working groups or subcommittees. Future steps will include identifying feasible opportunities, a concept plan and funding opportunities to ensure a vision and bright future for Kyneton. Come along to share your ideas and be a part of this exciting project”, Business Kyneton President Jason Sherrard said.

Sustainable Living Festival -
Saturday 3rd March
Kyneton Town Square
Three draft option master plans for the future use of the old Kyneton Primary School buildings and site are expected to be released for community input around the start of March.

The options have been prepared by consultants to the Council, Ethos Urban, following extensive surveying of the community late last year. The surveys revealed strong support for retention of the site and the whole building as the heart of the town for community and community group use. Fifteen written submissions were received.

The Kyneton Town Square Reference Group’s petition requesting the State Government to keep the school site and buildings in public ownership for community use and control has gained over 1900 signatories.

Following community input on the three draft master plan options the Council will determine a single final proposal which will in effect be a recommendation to the State Government, which will make the final determination on the future of the old school building and site.

The meetings of the Town Square Reference Group are open to all and are held at 7pm on the third Thursday of each month in the Kyneton Community and Learning Centre 34 Mollison St.
