Brexit Update
Following the EU referendum we have been regularly engaging with business support organisations in the Coast to Capital area. This is giving us valuable insight into the current mood of businesses and themes that are emerging as concerns and opportunities.
The initial fear that there would be a huge economic downturn has not materialised and the general mood seems to be that following the initial shock there is now a sense that people are getting on with ‘business as usual’. Business support organisations in our area have been very proactive in supporting their members and ensuring they are able to access the support they need. The main issues revolve around the UK’s reputation in Europe and a perception that the UK in not welcoming. There is a concern around freedom of movement and the impact this will have on businesses getting the right people with the right skills. There is also a worry whether the UK can continue to act as the location for International HQs. However there is positive news around international trade with partners reporting an increase in enquiries from first time exporters across all sectors.

We have now set up a new Task Force to look at a range of opportunities to increase the delivery of housing and regeneration in our area. The Task Force, which is made up of private and public experts, and will set out recommendations to our board in a report later this year.
Our Chief Executive Jonathan Sharrock said “The Task Force will look at the issues from a business perspective on how to deliver more homes and identify practical ways of doing this; separate to the statutory role played by the local authorities in planning housing development in their area.” Read press release here.
