GRPS has best count day in 20 years

District officials said the increase in students is worth over $1.7 million.

Grand Rapids Public Schools had one of their best count days in recent history this fall.

According to district officials, the district has seen a 20-student increase over fall of last year and a 214-student increase above their budgeted projections which is worth more than $1.7 million.

Officials said the gains are a mix of new and some returning students at neighborhood schools, as well as theme schools. In particular, Brookside Elementary saw a large increase in their count day numbers.

"There is just a group of parents that are out there, they're holding house parties and bringing neighbors in with kids in baby carriages saying come be part of this school," said John Helmholdt with GRPS.

Award-winning student videos explore cultural identity

Two area students won awards for their short videos exploring their cultural identity – and how others perceive them – in the 2019 Mosaic Mobile film contest.

Mariah Barrera, a senior at City High/Middle School, won a $1,000 first prize for her film “Red, White & Green,” a soul-searching reflection on being told at age 9 that she wasn’t a “real Mexican” because she didn’t speak Spanish.

The winners were among 10 finalists chosen from nearly 100 entries by students who shot films on their mobile devices. They were announced at the eighth annual Mosaic Event held Nov. 6 and 7 at Wealthy Theatre.

‘Strong Partnership’ Between GRCC and GRPS Provides Numerous Opportunities for Students

Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Rapids Public Schools have fostered a long withstanding partnership which has led to an increased number of GRPS students enrolling in GRCC as the college attracts top graduates from the district.

According to the release, there has been a 121% increase of enrollment into GRCC from GRPS since 2016. This past year, the valedictorians from Central Innovation and Ottawa Hills high school chose to attend GRCC.

This alliance has had a two-fold benefit.

“Our graduation rates have increased by more than 50 percent over the last seven years and more students are enrolling in post-secondary opportunities like GRCC,” said Ron Gorman, GRPS Interim Superintendent, in a statement. “We greatly value our partnership and longstanding history with GRCC and are excited to see the significant increase in our students enrolling there.”
