I hadn't expected to send out a newsletter while driving to Arizona, but I was eager to let you know about a few things.
First, I had a very successful trip to Grand Canyon, where I was, for the third time, invited to participate in the Celebration of Art. I was one of 25 artists, and I spent over a week on the South Rim, working hard to produce the best finished plein air paintings I could. I am proud to say that my studio painting sold at the opening event, as well as many of the outdoor pieces. In fact, over half my paintings sold. The remaining ones will be on exhibit and for sale at the Kolb Studio until late January. If you haven't seen the show yet, I urge you to get to Grand Canyon. The 25 artists are the best in their field, and the work is simply astounding! Also, let me remind you that 50% of the sales go to funding a new art museum on the Canyon's South Rim. This is a very worthwhile project, since both Grand Canyon National Park and the Grand Canyon Association have a remarkable and priceless collection that needs a good home.
(By the way, if you weren't following my blog, you can read my archived posts about the trip here.)
After the Grand Canyon event, I flew back home to pack up and then drive back west.
On the way to Arizona, I taught two very successful workshops in Maine (for Acadia Workshop Center) and in New Hamsphire (for the Monadnock Area Artists Association.) We had beautiful weather and some really good fall foliage. Now, I'm about to launch into the Sedona Plein Air Festival, where it'll be my seventh time invited to this prestigious event. Although Sedona has become my backyard, I still very much enjoy getting out to paint for this festival. Every festival juices me up, and this year, we'll be painting in some of the area's premiere vineyards and wineries. The festival runs from October 18-25. For more details and a full schedule, visit www.SedonaPleinAirFestival.com.
Once the Festival is over, I'll start teaching my popular Paint Sedona plein air painting workshops. This year for returning students, I've got some new and special locations for us to paint in. If you've never taken one of my Paint Sedona workshops, you're in for a treat. The workshops are small - no more than four students - so you'll get maximum attention. Also, it's a great winter getaway! If you can't make it this year, maybe you know someone who can; a Paint Sedona workshop makes a great gift for your painting friend. Consider a gift certificate. For full details on this year's program, please visit www.PaintSedona.com. (And it's not too early to think about signing up for a summertime workshop on Campobello Island in 2015! Visit www.PaintCampobello.com for details.)
My three new videos for Artists' Network are now available as DVDs and, later this fall, as streaming video. These videos have excellent production quality and feature some of my latest material. If you're thinking of taking a workshop with me, I encourage you to get the one that's most appropriate for you to get a jump-start on the class. Even if you're not taking a workshop, you'll find the material valuable and exciting. You can get the DVDs individually or as a collection (with bonus digital versions of my book, Backpacker Painting: Outdoor with Oil & Pastel as well as a compendium of some of my Artist's Magazine articles) at http://www.northlightshop.com/michael-chesley-johnsons-secrets-to-oil-and-pastel-painting-success-collection.
Finally, in addition to my plein air workshops, I've scheduled a three-Saturday pastel-only studio-only class for November 15 and 22, and December 13. Cost is $200 for the three afternoons (1-5 pm). If you're interested in this, please let me know.
And don't forget that all of my books are now available at Amazon! You can visit my Amazon author site here to buy the books: http://www.amazon.com/author/johnson.
That's all the news. I'll send another note after the Sedona Plein Air Festival!
P.S. - I'd appreciate this if you'd forward this to your painting friends, painting group or fellow art patrons!
