Desert View Tree by Michael Chesley Johnson

"Desert View Tree" 9x12 oil (available)

Sedona, Arizona

Another Paint Sedona season has ended. Trina, Saba and I are closing up the house, packing the car and about to head for points east. Although it's sad to leave the southwest, we are looking forward to the workshops we'll teach along the way and to finally getting back to our beloved island. But before we go, I wanted to give you some news about our latest adventure.

We've just returned from a wonderful plein air painting retreat at Zion National Park in Utah. We had six painters, most of whom were previous students, working in oil or pastel. Thanks to the great weather and the fact that everyone got along really well, the retreat was everything we'd hoped it would be. We turned out some excellent work, enjoyed helpful group critiques, and our evenings were filled with art talk. We liked it so much, we're going to do it again in April 2014. Visit for details.

By the way, if you want to get in line for the next one, it will be in Taos, New Mexico, April 21-27, 2013. Just like the Zion retreat, it'll be a small group. We'll paint the Rio Grande Gorge and the historic adobes of Taos, explore the high desert around Taos and visit Nicolai Fechin's studio. It'll be a retreat to remember! Price will be $800/participant with a $200 additional fee for a partner. (You must share the room, and it is only if space is available.) For more information, visit

We also had a good time at the First Annual Plein Air Convention & Expo in Las Vegas. If you've been following my blog ( you'll know that it was a good opportunity to see some really great artists painting. I enjoyed meeting old friends and making some new ones. The next one will be in Pacific Grove, California, and I'm hoping to get to that one, too.

Finally, I want to mention that time is running out to put down a deposit for the March 5-11, 2013, New Zealand trip. Deposits are due June 1 of this year. It's a trip of a lifetime! Our guide will be my friend, fellow artist and native New Zealander Adele Earnshaw. If you can't go, but would like a memento of the trip, I am trying to extend the trip to paint. You can sponsor this second week by buying shares for which you can get your pick of paintings. For details, visit

For a full list of upcoming workshops and events, please scroll down to the bottom or see my website.  I should mention that I am now taking deposits for my Campobello Island plein air workshops. The available weeks are starting to fill, so if you're thinking about joining us, don't wait!

That's all for now. I'll write again once we're on Campobello.
