Center on Halsted Community Programming, Lovin' Lakeview Campaign, and Census Data Tracking

Dear Neighbor,

I hope everyone had a safe and socially-distant Labor Day weekend! My office joined neighbors on Saturday to pitch in for cleaning up Kelly Park with the Chicago Cubs, East Lakeview Neighbors, and the Chicago Parks Foundation. After obtaining budgetary support for the park earlier this year, I was proud to see so many volunteers come together to beautify this wonderful green space for our community. Check out some pictures from the event below:

Additionally, in an effort to raise awareness about filling out the 2020 Census and help protect our neighbors from COVID-19, I distributed "Make It Count" masks to Lakeview Pantry, Howard Brown Health, and MADO Healthcare of Uptown. Go to my2020census.gov and fill out your census today if you haven't already done so - you have until September 30th!

In this newsletter, you will find:

  • Updates on community programming from the Center on Halsted;
  • How to get involved in the Lovin' Lakeview Campaign to support our local businesses;
  • Information on voting in November: obtaining a mail-in ballot, applying to be an election judge/poll coordinator, and more;
  • New Census 2020 data tracking and how to fill out your census; and
  • Deadline extensions for seniors from the Illinois Secretary of State

As always, if you have any general questions about services or specific COVID-19 guidelines, feel free to call our office at 773-348-8974; email us at info.staterepyoni@gmail.com; or visit coronavirus.illinois.gov. Also be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter for the most recent news and updates as we receive them.

Lovin' Lakeview Campaign to Support Local Businesses

This month, the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce is announcing the launch of the Lovin' Lakeview campaign! The Lovin' Lakeview campaign was created to share the stories and experiences of local businesses, employees, and neighbors - to show people how easy it is to keep Lovin' Lakeview.

To help spread the word and support our neighborhood businesses, use the hashtag #LovinLakeview on social media and use these Lovin' Lakeview logo(s) and social media frames for Instagram and Facebook posts and cover photos. You can use these images to frame other images to include the logo.

For more information on the campaign, contact sammi@lakevieweast.com or visit lakevieweast.com.

Voting Reminders

Concerned about voting this year due to the coronavirus pandemic? Be sure to complete your application to Vote by Mail by Thursday, September 24th. For the General Election, Chicago voters may use any Early Voting & Registration location in the city from October 14th - November 3rd. To register to vote or change your address click here. Ballots will be mailed starting September 24th - October 5th. Once you submit your ballot via the mail you will then be able to track your ballot through a secure link and receive a confirmation that your ballot has been processed. Alternatively, you may drop off your ballot at any secure drop box in the city. Drop off locations will be released later this month.

COVID-19 has also caused a shortage of poll workers and election judges all across Illinois. In order for us to have a fair, safe and secure election, it is vital to have election judges and poll workers. To volunteer as an election judge, visit chicagoelections.gov/en/serving-as-a-judge-of-election.html.

It is important to note that every voter must wear a mask or face covering when voting in person, visiting an early voting site or dropping off your early vote at a secure dropbox. Please make sure to practice proper social distancing when possible.

Census Data Tracking

While our office has been hard at work getting the word out about filling out the 2020 Census, the data analytics site Hard To Count has compiled an interactive map to track census response rates and trends by neighborhood, zip code, and legislative district.

As of this week, District 12 has a 67.7% response rate, down from the 2010 rate of 79.4%. It takes all of us to make sure we get the funding and support we deserve, so if you haven't done so already, go to my2020census.gov and get counted today!
