Cultivating Community Together

We believe that healthy local food systems are the foundation for a thriving community. Together, we are becoming active "co-producers" of an alternative to industrial agriculture. We are grateful to the many diverse people who are doing the important work of building healthy, resilient communities.

This year, LifeCycles' work was enabled by more than 500 volunteers. We rescued over 60,000 lbs of local food and harvested 633 backyard fruit trees for our largest harvest - ever! We also hosted over 250 food literacy workshops in: schools, community gardens, farms, libraries, community orchards, and community kitchens across the Capital Region.

As the season comes to a close, we want to say a big thank you for stepping up this year! Working together, we've cultivated community and sowed the seeds of health for our region.

Social Enterprise
This year we launched our Backyard Blend cider, in partnership with Spinnakers Brew Pub. This delicious local brew, crafted with 100% rescued fruit, was available in Spinnakers liquor distribution branches (in Vic West and James Bay). Watch for it again during the high cider season of 2017 (summer time).
Community Food
Our Food Literacy work aims to serve the CRD’s most vulnerable. Here’s what one participant shared: “It is so hard for me to live in isolation, it is really nice to be able to come together with other people and cook, and meet new people. I am really thankful. I want to come back and make salsa and relish."
Farm Gleaning
We smashed last season's record of food rescued, and re-distributed over 60,000 lbs of local food (last year's record was 50,000 lbs). Thanks to our Farm Gleaning efforts, this now includes a wide range of local vegetables in addition to fruit, which were distributed to thousands of food bank users during the season.
