Remembering Mike Gaughan
Last week, our PR community was shaken when a noted leader who shaped our local PR community for many decades, unexpectedly passed away. Mike Gaughan, co-founder and chairman of the Denver, public relations and marketing firm MGA Communications Inc. (MGA), passed away Aug. 25 following complications from surgery at the age of 77.

In 1987, Mike formed MGA with Jeff Julin and Cricket Smith. As one of Denver’s leading firms, MGA’s passion is helping others understand and connect with the people who matter most to their business. The company focuses its public relations initiatives and efforts around government, industrial, transportation, and natural resources.

“You can count on two hands the number of PR legends we have had in this town. Mike was one of them.” – Jeremy Story, Denver PR Blog

The PR Community Speaks

Since Mike’s passing, there has been an outpouring of comments remembering Mike and expressing condolences for the MGA family. It’s easy to see the impact Mike had on his co-workers, clients, friends and acquaintances just be reading the comments and love expressed through social media.

I am so sad to hear this! Jeff - I am so thankful I got to see both of you at the PRSA event this spring. It had been years and I was hoping to reconnect again this fall. I will never forget Mike's smile, his laugh and his brilliant pr mind. You, Cricket, the whole MGA team and your families are all in my thoughts and prayers. Much love! - Kristin Yantis

We are deeply saddened with this news. An amazing man, full of love for life and those around him, Mike will be dearly missed by all of us. - Barolo Grill

I was one of those young PR guys who got his start with the help of Michael. His huge heart and keen mind were and continue to be an example of how I choose to show up in the world. Surrounding you all with light and love. - David S. Goldberg

I can still hear his hearty laugh. Great humor, great compassion, great man. - Shannon Clark Diederich

My sympathies to all at MGA, present and past. Mike was a force, a great friend and so much fun. I was fortunate to be an MGA client for 25 years and to work with Mike. I miss him already. - Deborah Fallin

When I think about Mike, I first think about his incredible, booming laugh. It was seismic. And it could shake whatever ennui you were sticky with loose from your psyche and turn your day around. It was a force of nature and one of the rare sounds I can call up in my head at will. It never fails to make me smile. I’ll miss that laugh. I’ll miss his incredible zest for life. I’ll miss the way he used to bust my balls, which, admittedly, took me a while to learn that he did this because he loved me. I’ll miss his endless well of entertaining anecdotes. I’ll miss his warm, smiling face. I’ll miss my friend.  - Jon Ekstrom
