Summer camp for all: Puente partners make it happen
It was an ordinary, sunny Tuesday morning. By 8 a.m., most people on the South Coast were well into their daily summer routines – work, errands, childcare. But for 17 lucky youngsters, the day was anything but ordinary. By 8 a.m., the campers in Puente’s YMCA Day Camp program were already dribbling basketballs as fog threaded though the redwoods at Camp Jones Gulch in La Honda. Puente helps bring youth into the light
A slip of paper, a piece of plastic: it seems almost arbitrary to think that is all that separates “documented” from “undocumented” Californians. But nearly anyone from the latter group could tell you that although our differences may seem slight, not having that piece of paper changes everything. It isn’t just a legal issue; it carries with it a profoundly real psychological impact – the feeling of belonging, of legitimacy, of building toward a future of living in the light. Larry Trujillo walks into the Puente office, and it’s like the sun has come out. “Hola, Puenteritos!” he calls over to a huddle of Puente youth. “Larry!” They pop their heads up and grin with enthusiasm. Puente announces first ever Fall Harvest Fundraiser
On September 14, Puente will hold its first Fall Harvest Fundraiser on the charming premises of Harley Farms Goat Dairy in Pescadero. The event marks the first time Puente will charge for tickets, and it will benefit Puente’s children and youth programs “We’ve had many house parties and community-wide events at which people have been very, very generous. We feel in our 16th year we can continue with those events, but also start mixing it up... Details and registration here.
Second Annual Puente 5k/10k Fun Run/Walk, August 16!
Join us for our second annual 5k and first ever 10k Fun Run and walk. The run/walk kicks off with a Zumba warm up outside Puente's office (620 North St. in Pescadero). Delicious snacks and drinks will be waiting after the run/walk. All proceeds benefit Puente and its mission to promote health and wellness throughout the South Coast.
