Spanish Tip of the Month

Take advantage of the SLWED flashcards on when doing your weekly studying. The tip this month is in case you didn’t know, you can ALPHABATIZE the flashcard decks (on the computer)! This will help you see the decks in order and not all jumbled up. The Quizlet App has not yet created an option to alphabetize unfortunately.
Tip: When you are on the computer on quizlet in the top right hand corner you can choose to view the decks by the ones that were last added or alphabetical.

Here is the link that will allow you to sign up for the "Spanish Lessons with Emily D" class flashcards if you do not yet have a username:

Medical Spanish Class

Pedro G. and Emily D. have been working hard and are going to continue working hard to provide a medical Spanish class that will be geared for intermediate and advanced speakers (at least have finished levels 3 or 4 before taking this class). Obviously students that are medical providers will have a direct need and interest in this class but students of any profession are welcome to join the class and would learn a lot of new vocabulary that would be a great tool to add to their Spanish repertoire.
Some of the things that will be covered include: taking a patient history, doing a physical exam, prescribing medication, vital signs, diagnosis, forming a plan with Spanish-speaking patients and more. The class will be taught at a high level that is focused around patient/provider role-playing and various types of speaking activities to simulate an encounter with a Spanish-speaking patient.
We hope to have everything ready for the Spring of 2015. More details to come soon!

If you are a medical provider and have any IDEAS or SUGGESTIONS about what you would like to have included in the class and/or would like to be on our email list to know about this class and details as soon as it is scheduled, please email Emily Daniel at

Ready for Spanish: Dates for

Kid Spanish Classes

We announced a few months ago that we are going to focus all of our energy on adult lessons and kids ages 12 and up and have teamed up with another local Nashville business called Ready for Spanish to send any interested parents with children ages 3-12 to them (the ages that they specialize in). They have some upcoming camps that you may be interested in!
Ready For Spanish Camps explore Spanish language, culture and customs.  Students will develop vocabulary and practice Spanish conversations while having fun.  Registration is now open for our Spring and Summer Camps.  For complete information on Spanish Camps for kids, you can visit:

Kirby Pain -- Spring Hill, TN

1) Nombre: Kirby Pain
2) ¿Dónde vives? Vivo en Spring Hill, Tennessee
3) ¿Dónde trabajas? Trabajo en Caterpillar Financial Services
4) How long have you been studying Spanish with SLWED and who is your teacher?

I just started to learn Spanish this past year. I have had both Lindsay and Emily as teachers with Pedro filling in every so often.
5) Where would you like to use your Spanish?

When I saw that Spanish classes were available where I work, I had just recently started a new job where I have regular contact with our Latin America offices in Mexico, Chile and Brazil. I never really thought that I would ever learn another language but this seemed like a good opportunity in that studying the language would help me learn a little about the people and culture and be able to improve engagement with my associates in Latin America. I can better appreciate their efforts in communicating in English knowing this is their second language and that it takes a lot of work.

6) What advice or words of encouragement would you give to someone who is just starting to learn Spanish?

Hang in there as it can be frustrating at times and take advantage of whatever resources are made available. Lean on your mentor (
for employees at Caterpillar Financial) and practice as much as you can.
7) What is your favorite Spanish singer or band or favorite Spanish song?

I have always been a big fan of Carlos Santana and always watch the movie Woodstock when it’s on so I can catch his performance. I Saw him live with Eric Clapton way back when in the 70’s which was an awesome concert.

8) What countries have you traveled to or would you like to visit?

I have been to Mexico a few times for vacation and liked Cozumel the most. Have also been to China twice to adopt a girl the first time and a boy the second. They teach English in the schools and kids came up to us to practice. Our family intends to go back to China someday and I would like to visit our offices in Latin America as well.

9) How have you used your Spanish? Any interesting stories how it came in handy?

I haven’t been able to use much yet in a practical way, though I might throw a Spanish line or two in an e-mail. I have had some fun annoying my teen-age daughter with some Spanish banter who knows little herself through classes at school.

10) What is your favorite thing about learning Spanish with SLWED?

I am learning something I never thought I would. In doing so, I have also met a lot of interesting people and made friends I otherwise wouldn’t have.

11) Other Comments?

I like the approach SLWED takes and the classes are well structured, innovative and fun. Enough resources are made available to assist including mentors (
at Caterpillar Financial), which helps tremendously.
