Alert List

During lockdown the literary magazine Granta is offering free access to one of its old issues, the chosen issue changing each week. Currently Granta 73: Necessary Journeys, published December 2001, is free to read. This issue contains Burying the Emperor by John Ryle, who attended the funeral of Haile Selassie I in November 2000.
John Ryle is a British writer and anthropologist, working for aid agencies and human rights organizations in Africa and the Middle East. He is a former contributing editor to Granta. He has published an expanded and corrected version of his Burying the Emperor article on his own website.

The original Granta article can be read here while it's still available.

Travel writer A. A. Gill and Magnum photographer Peter Marlow also attended the funeral and produced an illustrated article on the funeral, Selassie Come Home, for the Sunday Times Magazine.

Between 22 April and 21 November 2010, the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford displayed 21 of Peter Marlow's photographs of the funeral (including the one above) in their exhibition The Burial of Haile Selassie.
More of Peter Marlow's photographs taken during this trip (69 in total) can be found on the Magnum website.
