Save the date: Side event on Independent Living at the UN

During the 12th Session of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (15 September – 3 October 2014), ENIL, GRIP and Onafhankelijk Leven are organising a side event on Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Pavel Kadõkov was 19 years old, when he lost his eyesight and right hand in a bomb explosion. “Am I not going to be able to live a life?”- was the first question that popped up in his head. This accident lead him to a crisis that made him stop escaping from himself and find thoughts and values that gave him the real power to live.
Could you tell me a little bit about your background?

Slovenia: 'Conference on the transition from institutional towards community based care'

A Conference on the transition from institutional towards community based care in the republic of Slovenia, BRDO was held in Slovenia on the 6th May 2014. As a result of this meeting  a number of conclusions were drawn up and are listed below:

Deinstitutionalisation, DI, and independent life for various groups, who are living in social, education and health institutions, has to become main political and professional direction of Republic of Slovenia. Therefore it is necessary to strengthen understanding and awareness of the deinstitutionalisation concept as well as development, widening and strengthening of the network of various community based services.

Xabier Ansorena tells us of his time as an ENIL intern!

It has been six months already since I came to ENIL and unfortunately it is time to say goodbye. It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of such a great organization and a wonderful team.

In these six months, I have acquired invaluable knowledge about disability issues in general and the Independent Living movement in particular. Although I had worked with disabled people before, I only had a small idea about aspects regarding Independent Living and article 19 of the UNCRPD, Deinstitutionalization, Hate Crime and Discrimination, and also how international NGOs work and advocate at a political level.
