Welcome to the January issue of ENIL, Independent Living News!
ENIL started the year with an appeal to the Independent Living supporters. The first article published in January revealed the highly disturbing situation in the UK with the closure of the Independent Living Fund. Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) is asking for donations for an Independent Living Fighting Fund to support individual disabled people to challenge cuts to their social care support packages. Have a read and spread the news!
Only a few days ago Jamie Bolling (ENIL Executive Director) made a review of the work ENIL did in 2015 and outlined the upcoming year – another busy and hopefully successful year for all Independent Living supporters across Europe and beyond.
Yesterday ENIL published with great pleasure an announcement of great significance for disabled people living in the Netherlands – the country finally adopted the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). In the article below you can read an interview with Otwin Van Dijk, a wheelchair user and a member of the Lower Chamber (Netherlands Parliament).
In this edition of the newsletter ENIL brings another good news – the
Myth Buster on Independent Living dealing with some of the most common misconceptions about disabled people, independent living and personal assistance, first published by ENIL about an year ago, is now available in 7 languages. At the time of publishing the article they were 6, but on the next day ENIL’s allies from IC Lotos sent the publication translated in Bosnian too! You can find the versions in Bosnian, Bulgarian, Dutch, English, German, Hungarian and Lithuanian in the article below.
ENIL’s advisory panel member Raffaello Belli wrote an article as a reaction to the commonplace excuses of the authority figures in Italy when it comes to lack of funding for personal assistance.
The next article you can find in this newsletter is an invitation to the travelling photo exhibition “Proud. Strong. Visible”, taking place between 20th January and 26th February 2016 in the “Gang Gallery” of “Mosaik GmbH” in Wiener Straße 148, Graz, Austria. This photo exhibition is part of a project aiming to raise awareness in society about Independent Living and its importance for disabled people.
Also, here you can read more about Lancaster University’s Centre for Disability Research 8th
Disability Studies conference, taking place between 6th
September 2016. In addition, ENIL informed its followers about The International Foundation for Applied Disability Research (FIRAH) 2016 Call for Projects for applied research on disabilities.
Find out more about the EASPD and Zero Project, collecting models of innovative good practices on Early Childhood. A call for nominations was launched in December 2015 and has been extended until 31st
January. So, hurry up!
Finally, ENIL presents a report on the final events of the Independent Living Network (ILNET) project that took place in December 2015 – January 2016. The project, implemented by ENIL in partnership with RUSIHAK Turkey and CIL-Sofia, aimed to promote Independent Living in Turkey and to ensure that disabled people in Turkey are better informed and able to advocate for Independent Living.
