Thanks to ENIL the impact of the crisis on disabled people is on the EU agenda

Since September 2009, ENIL has been working on a Resolution against the cuts in the European Union. After a lot of effort and hard work, on Tuesday 12th March 2013, a debate has taken place in the European Parliament. Although, the Resolution itself was not voted upon, having a debate on ‘Impact of Austerity on the lives and conditions of people with disabilities’ in the European Parliament is in and of itself an achievement. The debate brought the attention of Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission to the effects of the cuts in public spending and how these cuts are negatively affecting the lives of people with disabilities throughout Europe.

The Fight for the Independent Living Fund in the UK: DPAC and Disabled People to take the Government to Court

The Independent Living Fund (ILF) was set up in 1988 as a stand-alone central Government fund to which disabled people with high support needs could apply for direct payments for personal assistance (P.A.). The direct payments meant that people could afford to pay P.A.s for the assistance that they needed – round-the-clock, in some cases – to live independent lives.

The Journey to Independence: What role are foundations playing?

Foundations can play a critical role in bringing together and providing essential resources to support activities that foster independence, participation and create more meaningful lives for people with disabilities. Since 2009, the European Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disabilities has sought to breathe life and vigour into the application of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disability (UNCRPD).

Support Petition for a better PA Scheme in France

In France, a new law on disability has been implemented and since the 11th February 2005, people with disabilities have more payment options and autonomy, which results in a greater possibility of independent living. Within this context, this law is a big progression in the political field for disability.
