Editorial Update

Welcome to the April edition of ENIL, Independent Living News!

First and foremost, we would like to invite you to join us at the Second European Independent Living day – 5th May – with an activity you have planned or just by having a coffee with a friend and speaking about Independent Living. Here we present you with lots of inspirational ideas from different countries which have organised exciting events.

Also, in this edition, we present you with a hate speech case – reported to us by one of our members – Frank Larkin, chairperson of ‘Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland (SBHI). You can read his story and the actions he has undertaken to prevent discrimination on Facebook . ENIL fully supports every act of protecting human rights and encourages everybody to guard the Independent Living values in his/her community.
With our newly opened Brussels office, ENIL needs a full-time Office Manager. If you are interested in running ENIL’s administration and also be responsible for the financial management of the organisation, read the requirements in the article below.

As every month, we update you with the developments around Freedom Drive. In this edition you can read about the new location, the program for the event and can also download the registration form. Most details are already decided, we now wait to see how many we will be in Brussels!

We are happy to announce one interesting event for young disabled people in Europe. A Youth Summer School on Independent Living will take place in Istanbul, Turkey between 28th June and 2nd July. It is organised by ENIL in partnership with RUSIHAK and CIL-Sofia as part of the project “Independent Living Network: Promoting the right to independent living of people with disabilities in Turkey” (ILNET). Our project partners from RUSIHAK have also been at a study visit in Sofia, Bulgaria, and you can read about this below.

Also in this edition we present you with a complaint to the United Nations which was launched on 25th March. It was on behalf of disabled people in the UK whose rights have been breached by the closure of the Independent Living Fund (ILF). More information can be found on the website of our ally Disabled People Against the Cuts (DPAC).

Finally, we want to share with you some of the changes in ENIL leadership from the past months. Vibeke Marøy Melstrøm has stepped down from the position of the ENIL President in January this year. In addition, Martin Naughton has decided to leave his positions of Co-Executive Director and Company Secretary since March. ENIL wants to thank them and wishes success in all their work promoting Independent Living in Europe.

We hope you will enjoy reading and will find this edition of our newsletter meaningful and interesting to you!
