. . . and We're Off . . .
. . . to the opening of the 40th season of the Hingham Farmers Market. We look forward to welcoming back many of our award-winning vendors and saying hello to a number of terrific new ones (see below for full list). The 2015 season broke all attendance records and we're more sure than ever that 2016 will be even more successful. Stay tuned. Photo above: happy market-goers on an earlier HFM opening day.

SNAP Comes to the HFM
This year the Hingham Farmers Market will participate in the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Administered by the Friends of the Hingham Farmers Market, patrons qualified for SNAP benefits may get them by stopping by the Friends’ tent (opposite the main entrance). We are pleased to join many other farmers markets across the state and country offering SNAP. Go to http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-snap for more information.

Community Service & Education
Taste of Hingham tickets will be sold in the HFM Community Service & Education (CS&E) tent on Saturday, May 14, for the big event in Hingham Square on Saturday, May 21 (rain date is Sunday, May 22). If you have never been to this event - with food to tickle every palate - you must try it this year: Saturday, May 21, noon to 3 p.m, Hingham Square. Tickets are $25/family, $12/individual purchased in advance; $30/family, $15/individual the day of the event. Sponsored by the Hingham Downtown Association, the Hingham Congregational Church and Eat Well, Inc., the annual event benefits the Hingham Food Pantry and 13 other South Shore charities.
Also on May 14, the talented gardeners from
Master Gardeners will return. Stop by the "Ask-a-Master-Gardener" booth next week to answer all your gardening questions. Members of the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association (MMGA) are experienced and trained volunteers who provide information and educational resources to the gardening public. MGMA members will be at the HFM one weekend a month through October. They look forward to meeting old and new friends as they help market-goers find ideas and answers to any and all gardening questions.
The Hingham Farmers Market is pleased to be able to offer free space to non-profit community groups from Hingham and the Greater Boston area, thanks to generous support from the Hingham Institution for Savings. Welcome the groups heartily!

Pssst . . .
. . . this Sunday, May 8, is Mother's Day. Flowers, plants, arts, crafts, sweets, baked goods, soaps, jewelry, pottery - there is something for every mother and grandmother at the Hingham Farmers Market!

A Note on Parking
Anyone who has driven past "our" parking lot has certainly noticed a lot of activity. This is part of a long-planned recon-figuration by the Town of Hingham of the beach due to perpetual storm-related erosion. The town is constructing a seawall to address that issue, in addition to adding a pedestrian walkway along the sandline which, when completed, will extend the length of Hingham Harbor. The impact on the HFM is, in the short term, a reduction in available spaces. In the long term - perhaps as early as this season - the amount of available parking should expand significantly.
The good news is that much of the seawall's heavy construction has been completed and the market will set up in its usual spot with a slightly different look.

Thank You . . .
. . . to this year's HFM corporate sponsor, the
Hingham Institution for Savings. Thanks to their generosity, the market is able to support community service and education programs, musical enter-tainment for market-goers, speakers and visiting chefs and other events that make the market one of the best community spots around.

Getting Ready . . .
Fresh produce and then some! Top left: Adam Tedeschi of Second Nature Farm tends to seedlings just a short time ago; bottom left: young chicks staying warm and inside the brooder at Copicut Farm earlier this year; also joining the chicks now in the pasture: 1,800 Rhode Island Red laying hens for the best eggs you can buy; three photos of growing greens from Freitas Farm. More, for sure, from all our vendors this Saturday.
Market Scene
It may be a bit early for some of the vegetables and flowers seen here, but these long-time vendors - Mary Bukujian and her son, Richard, and Jeanette MacKenzie - have been market champions for over 30 years. Welcome back!
