Nautical News - January Edition
Hi and welcome to our first newsletter for the new year. As we start 2020 and embark on our 111th year it’s timely to look back at a few highlights from 2019.

Firstly 2019 was our 110th year in operation and we celebrated the milestone with a selection of existing and past owners of our recreational craft along with guests who we partnered with on key commercial projects for a casual gathering at RQYS Canaipa. A great way to share memories and to touch on our plans for the future.

From a recreational perspective, we launched the awesome Aura, a beautifully crafted custom 60-foot game fishing boat and according to the owner, she is raising some very nice fish. Commercially we were proud to be involved with the production of the Stewart Kerlin II, a custom landing craft built for Queensland Water Police to service the islands of Moreton Bay and beyond. Another example of our custom commercial boat building expertise.

We welcomed a number of our beautifully crafted boats of the past in for refits and annual maintenance along with a range of other exclusive projects including works on Hurrica V and Ningaloo amongst many other classics and modern superyachts, with the stunning Whistler in the yard right now undergoing some equipment upgrades and a repaint. Such an ageless design and beautifully presented vessel.

In the newsletter, we look back at another labour of love and the creation of the first 75’ Pilot Boat Matthew Flinders. An incredible insight from Bill Wright on the background to these boats that still inspire our business today.

Last year we undertook a considerable renovation of a beautiful Chris Craft runabout, we feature the project in the newsletter.

In our regular employee and supplier profile articles, our Naval Architect & Lead Designer Adam Evripidou provides his thoughts on the future of design in the industry, and we feature our longest-serving supplier Lex Baddiley Marine Engineering.

We’re excited to announce our new website, which features a great array of our current and past projects and all the latest from Norman R. Wright & Sons.

With some exciting news to announce soon around some new projects we're looking forward to an exciting 2020 and look forward to catching up again with past and present owners. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Happy Australia Day to all.

Regards the team @ Norman R. Wright & Sons
Matthew Flinders – From Who We Are Judged
In the 1700 and 1800’s Navigator Matthew Flinders undertook three journeys to the Southern Ocean completing circumnavigations of what we now know as Australia and in what we could only suggest would have been the most trying of ocean-going conditions, to say the very least. Many years later but with the same enthusiasm and passion for the Ocean, Ron Wright set out to design an ocean-going Pilot Boat that could sustain the harshest conditions our Ocean could throw at it, achieving the brief of designing a boat that could go to see in whatever a storm or cyclone could present. In 1967 Matthew Flinders, a Ron Wright designed 75 foot Pilot Boat, was born and aptly named after a forefather of the sea. Here Bill Wright provides a very interesting insight into the history of our first Pilot Boat Matthew Flinders and by which, all Norman R Wright Pilot Boats are still judged today.

Chris - Craft Class of 55 - Classic Renovation
Since the beginning, Christopher Smith crafted the boats that dreams are made of. Chris-Craft boats became the cultural icons that gave people a new freedom to explore the clear waters of local lakes and distant shores. And they were built with the values and benefits that defined a country and a way of life. More than any other brand, they were responsible for America’s romance with boats – and ultimately, for redefining boating pleasure for generations of people everywhere. The name Chris-Craft has always been synonymous with quality, and it’s not hard to see why. Whether designing a 21-foot runabout, or a 38-foot cruiser, Chris-Craft boats are crafted with painstaking detail by the most skilled carpenters, cabinetmakers, joiners and artisans in the business. It’s what ensures that your boat will be perfect – and unlike any other on the water.
