Pack Peace of Mind Campaign 2016 - Justine Case and her family are back!

Building on the success of the 2015 campaign, which improved awareness of ATOL and the ATOL certificate, the new campaign will be running immediately after Christmas through to early Summer. You can read our latest press notice on the campaign here.
The new campaign’s focus will remain on lower income families who we believe are at greater risk from booking unprotected travel arrangements, and it will encourage them to look beyond the price and make sure their holiday is ATOL protected.
The key campaign messages are:

  • Pack peace of mind when booking your family holiday this year by checking for ATOL protection
  • Your ATOL certificate gives you peace of mind that your holiday is financially protected
  • When booking your family holiday this year, remember to look beyond the price and check for ATOL protection

Once again the media plan will include Justine Case and her family appearing in digital advertising, as well as magazines and on radio.  This activity will be amplified by extensive social media exposure through Facebook and Twitter, as well as PR activities.
ATOL holders are crucial to the success of the campaign because the campaign looks to reinforce the important ATOL protection messages you provide in your marketing and when ATOL certificates are issued.  We want to get as many ATOL holders as we can involved with the campaign, so keep an eye out for more information about how you can actively participate early in the New Year.
In the meantime, please ensure that your publicity material complies with ATOL Standard Term 1 to ensure consumers are clear on their protection when booking.

Rebalancing ATOL – Part I – ATOL Reporting Accountants

From 1 April 2016, we will only accept accountants reports from ATOL holders signed off by ATOL Reporting Accountants, that is members of professional accounting bodies who are designated to perform ATOL reporting having received the appropriate training from that body and completed the online ATOL Training module from the CAA.

We have published further information on the scheme on our dedicated web page, including frequently asked questions.

Rebalancing ATOL – Part II – New Financial Tests

We are currently finalising the new financial tests for SBAs and Standard ATOL holders and will be publishing a new financial policy note early next year. Alongside this, we will also provide details of how to make a preliminary assessment your financial data against the new criteria.

Rebalancing ATOL – Part III – Online Self-Service Facility

In our decision on Rebalancing ATOL published in March this year, we confirmed that we will be developing an online licence application solution as part of a broader programme of IT improvements within the CAA. We are making progress on this and will update you on developments later next year.

ATOL Compliance – Enforcement activity

Following on from recent prosecutions for breach of the ATOL Regulations, we continue to work with Trading Standards in support of their investigations into unlicensed operators.

Earlier this month, Muhammed Razzaque of Shagatom Travel International Limited based in Green Street in Newham, London was prosecuted and found guilty for falsely displaying an ATOL logo.  He received a fine of £750 and costs of £1,500.

If you are concerned about an unlicensed operator, please e-mail the ATOL Compliance team at, as well as your local trading standards officer.

Guidance for charities on complying with ATOL

In response to industry feedback, we have published guidance on the ATOL requirements when offering trips to individuals for fund raising purposes. In producing this document, we worked with the various charity Regulators in the UK to provide clarity on the key ATOL issues for charities working in the travel sector. Read it here.
