Hi <<First Name>>,

The past week has been difficult for people in B.C. We saw incredible amounts of rainfall and wind that led to damaging floods across many parts of our Province. My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.

I want to acknowledge and thank the residents of Burnaby-Deer Lake who have stepped up during this incredibly difficult time to help out in any way they can. I am so proud of our community. Your kindness during this challenging time is truly amazing.

If any of our community members wish to donate funds or supplies to evacuees please contact or the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111.

By looking out for each other, we will get through this together.

Provincial State of Emergency Declared

Our government has declared the State of Emergency to mitigate impacts on transportation and support the provincewide response and recovery.

We’ve requested federal assistance and Canadian Air Force assets are already operational, with more resources on the way. Emergency Support Services and Search and Rescue teams are providing emergency shelter, food and other supports to thousands of evacuees and stranded travellers.

Here are some key links for the coming days:

Financial assistance is available for people affected by flooding

Disaster Financial Assistance is now available for eligible British Columbians in the southwest, central and southeast areas of the province and Vancouver Island who were affected by flooding and landslides.

DFA is available to homeowners, residential tenants, business owners, local governments, Indigenous communities, farmers and charitable organizations that we're unable to obtain insurance to cover disaster-related losses.

British Columbians can access the DFA application online here.

Province introduces legislation to uphold Indigenous rights

Two years ago, the B.C. legislature unanimously passed the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, affirming our commitment to upholding the human rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Our government introduced two pieces of legislation, developed in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples, that further uphold Indigenous human rights and advance reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in B.C.

These two pieces of legislation represent important steps to implement the Declaration Act and our commitment to make sure provincial laws are consistent with the UN Declaration.

The Commemoration of Louis Riel

This past Tuesday, we commemorated the life and achievement of Louis Riel and thereby proclaimed November 16, 2021, as #LouisRielDay in British Columbia. We proudly displayed the Métis flag in the Hall of Honour at B.C. Legislature. The anniversary of Riel's death enables us to commemorate, reflect on, and honour the sacrifice he made as an advocate for Métis and the French language.

Our government recognizes the importance of a strong connection with the Métis people and is committed to preserving a positive relationship with them. As we commemorate Riel's legacy, let us continue to strive toward reconciliation with Métis people in British Columbia and across Canada, so that we may all have a brighter future.

I'm here for you

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about any provincial issue, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help you.
