In a special meeting of the Judson ISD Board of Trustees, the name of the district’s third comprehensive high school was decided. The board voted 5-2 to name the new school Mackey High School after former superintendent Dr. Willis Mackey who retired last school year. Dr. Mackey came to the Judson ISD in December of 2007 and was one of the longest serving superintendents for the district with numerous accomplishments.
The naming of the school will now allow contractors to begin the branding process of the school and set in motion the decision of what the school mascot will be. Principal Christina Clark will be heading up that task and will work with parents and students in the community to determine that.

Judson Gets Piano Through VH1 Save The Music & Avnet
It was a joyous ceremony as the Judson High School Choir unveiled a new Kawai CS10 hybrid piano. The piano gift was the result of Choir Director Kay Sherrill submitting for a competitive grant through the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. The Keys+Kids grant that the school won was made possible by Avnet, Inc., a Fortune 500 technology company based in Phoenix, Arizona that's been around since the 1920s and has a branch office in northern Bexar County. The new hybrid piano is valued at $10,000. While it is an electric piano, it has the sound and feel of a concert grand piano. The presentation included representatives from VH1 Save The Music Foundation, Avnet Inc., Judson High School Administration, JISD Administration and the JISD School Board. Judson High School was one of twelve schools nationwide that were awarded this grant.
After the piano was unveiled, it was taken for a test drive by Judson High School Choir student Rachel Rogers who played Prelude in C sharp by Sergei Rachmaninov. Later the Judson Choir performed two pieces with the new piano. Part of the ceremony also included brief essays from some of the students that described what music and coming to sing each day means to them. Ms. Sherrill says the piano will be used daily for rehearsals and concert events and will be an integral part of music instruction for years to come. A big thank you to the Save The Music Foundation and Avnet for making this possible and making a difference for our students. We make beautiful music together like this.
Deep Breathing Techniques & Stress
When stressors throw your nervous system out of balance, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing can bring it back into balanced by producing the relaxation response, a state of deep calmness. Deep breathing is a simple yet powerful relaxation technique. The key to deep breathing is to breathe deeply from the abdomen (belly breathing). When you take deep breaths from the abdomen you inhale more oxygen. Follow these steps:
Sit comfortably with your back straight.
Try to inhale and exhale out as much air as you can while expanding and contracting your abdominal muscles. Your lower abdomen should rise and fall.
Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
Count slowly to five as you inhale and exhale.
Slowly repeat between 3 and 10 times.
If you find it difficult belly breathing while sitting up, try lying down.
Hall Of Honor: Call For Nominations
The Judson ISD Hall of Honor is a great way of recognizing those who have made outstanding contributions to the district either athletically or in a civic way. We'd like to get your nominations of someone you know that has served the district in one of two ways. A civic honoree should be a graduate that has gone on to achieve success as a positive role model or pillar in the their community. Athletically, the nominee should be someone whose achievements in the sports world could apply to their time spent at a JISD high school and/or beyond. The selections are vetted and inductees decided by a committee made up of the high school principals, the superintendent, the athletic directors and three community members based on Hall of Honor criteria. The deadline for nominations is November 3, 2015.
Each year it is a somber reminder that our freedom is indeed not free. There are those who pay the price for that liberty that we should remember and be thankful for each day. Lt. Col. Karen Wagner was killed on September 11, 2001 at the Pentagon serving in one of the most important military positions in the country. When she graduated from Judson High School, you knew she was capable of great things, it was just a matter of which road she was going to take. On 9-11-15, administrators, board members, students and teachers gathered around Karen Wagner's gravesite to remember her contributions she made during her relatively short life, and contemplate what to do with our own potential. Words of remembrance and honor were read by Wagner's Girls Basketball Coach Andrea Camacho and Wagner Principal Donald Stewart. The ceremony closed with the playing of taps.

To increase accountability within the district, Judson ISD has a Fraud and Abuse Hotline. This is a way of anonymously reporting incidents of wrongly using district resources. A person can report problems two ways. Through a toll free hotline 855-640-6200 (in English) and 800-216-1288 (in Spanish) or you can just REPORT HERE. A third party company called Lighthouse is handling all the reports for credibility purposes and will look at each report on an individual basis. The online form also allows a person to upload supporting documents if they apply. This “report it” link can also take you to a page where crimes and bullying can be reported.
