EC Public Consultation:
Alcohol Advertising & the AVMSD

Monday, September 7th 2015

Dear Sir/Madam,
Attached with this email you will find a filled in version of the consultation questions for evaluation of the Audiovisual Media Services Directorate (AVMSD). Since the AVMSD is the only European law regulating media (including alcohol advertising and sponsorship) at the European level, we (IOGT-NTO, EUCAM and STAP) propose that the current evaluation of the AVMSD results in stronger regulations of the AVMSD.
With this aim our three organizations have cooperatively answered the consultation questions. Through this email and the attached document we want to make it easier for partners throughout Europe to answer the questions, specifically with the intent of informing the EC of the need to strengthen the regulations on alcohol marketing in the AVMSD.
The answers you can read in the attached document were drafted in cooperation between IOGT-NTO, EUCAM and STAP as a solid base argument. We believe that the answers given, present a good case to strengthen the regulations on alcohol advertising and sponsorship in the AVMSD, however it is possible that you have other views or other information (perhaps based on examples of advertising or regulations specifically in your country) that you want to provide in the document. IOGT-NTO, EUCAM and STAP do not argue that the answers that we have filled in are the only way to answer and we encourage you to use your own words and refer to your own (nation specific) experiences, we only offer this document to make it easier for you to let the European Commission know that we demand stronger restrictions on alcohol advertising and that the evaluation of the AVMSD is the perfect opportunity for this.
Besides filling in the document and sending it to before the 30th of September, we also would request that when you answer on behalf of an organization, that you register your organization in the ECs Transparency Register and enter your organization’s Transparency Register number in the document. In this way your answers will not be filed as those of private persons but as those of the organization you represent.

With kind regards,

Wim van Dalen, STAP
Irma Kilim, IOGT-NTO
Gerard van der Waal, EUCAM
