Dear <<Name>>,
This email is the new edition of the EUCAM newsletter. The following news items have been published on www.EUCAM.info in May of 2013:

Des Bishop Under the Influence Episode 2 on Alcohol Marketing in Ireland

Documentary on alcohol marketing in Ireland

Last month we found the digital version of a documentary on alcohol marketing in Ireland that was broadcasted recently on Irish public TV channel RTÉ ONE. We enjoyed the documentary immensely and think it shows the universal problems with alcohol marketing in a fun and accesible manner. Below you'll find further information about the documentary, if you click on the picture above, or the link below you'll open a page on online video sharing website Dailymotion.com.

In Under the Influence, comedian Des Bishop tackles one of the great taboos of Irish society and explores the Irish relationship with alcohol and other addictive behaviours. In episode two Bishop explores the areas of alcohol marketing, sponsorship and regulation. He teases out the tricks of the marketing trade and looks at the attempts at self-regulation by the drinks industry including the drinkaware.ie campaign. What effect has the widespread availability and greater affordability had on Irish drinking patterns?

US: Study finds self-regulated alcohol product placement in movies ineffective

05/30/13 - Adverts promoting alcohol brands could finally face legal restrictions in the United Kingdom after Ofcom (the government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting industry) said it requires advertising regulators to review the rules that limit their exposure to children. The request follows an Ofcom report which shows that the number of alcohol adverts children see has risen.

US: Study finds self-regulated alcohol product placement in movies ineffective

05/29/13 - A new study by the Norris Cotton Cancer Center finds that current constraints on advertising for alcohol products in movies that are viewed by adolescents are ineffective. The study analysed alcohol and tobacco portrayal in popular movies between 1996 and 2009. US tobacco placement became regulated by law and dropped significantly; alcohol placement was regulated by the industry itself and raised considerably.

05/13/13 - HRIDAY - SHAN a Delhi based NGO has complained to the Indian Information and Broadcasting Ministry that the Royal Challengers, a Premier League cricket team from Bangalore, is directly advertising alcohol through sponsorship. The club is sponsored by (and received its name from) liquor brand Royal Challenge, as well as a vodka brand. One of the complaints is that the alcohol branded shirt sponsors infringe on the Cable Television Networks rules during sports broadcasts.

Minimum pricing will bring “substantial health and social benefits” says new IAS report

05/05/13 - A new report, ‘Is alcohol too cheap in the UK? Setting the case for a Minimum Unit Price [MUP] for alcohol’ was published this month by the Institute of Alcohol Studies. The paper, written by Dr Tim Stockwell and Dr Gerald Thomas, reviews the most recent evidence on MUP, whilst addressing common criticisms of the policy. The authors conclude that policymakers can be confident that substantial health and social benefits will follow if the measure is introduced in the UK.
