In today's newsletter:  It may be end of financial year but taking stock is not just about counting stuff.

This year marks the tenth since Washpool began in our farmhouse kitchen and while I know the 30th of June is the date when businesses are supposed to count up their raw materials and retail stock, it's not what my mind turns to at all (and no, it's not just avoidance).

While I like to think of myself as a humble person, I feel that Washpool is so much more than the sum of 'countable things'. I don't know if it's a weird thing for an introvert to say, but I feel that it's the people, relationships and genuine connections over the ten years that really add up.

Glancing over the figures this morning, a treasured staff member (and book keeper) said "you'd be doing well if you didn't have to pay us".  Well yes, but that misses the point that the satisfaction of creating meaningful employment in our rural area is one of my measures of success.  And now, more than ever as our region battles through this catastrophic drought I value the support of our clients all over Australia.

It was a heartwarming experience meeting new and existing clients at Finders Keepers in Brisbane recently, especially when I could hear people approaching saying "look, there's Washpool".  We felt welcome, appreciated and, well, warm & fuzzy.  STOP PRESS: We've just learned today that we've been accepted to return to Finders Keepers in November.

And can I just make a special mention of how much we also appreciate our male customers? Some people are surprised to learn that guys make up around 40% of our clientele, but it's no surprise to us.  We have steadfastly and deliberately tried to ensure our range is inclusive, so it's been fantastic this week to see:
  • guys buying our face oil to apply to their beard and dry facial skin
  • a bloke purchasing his shower shave & shampoo bars and natural household cleaning goods and stainless steel pegs online
  • and the man who turned up in person this morning after using our soap while staying locally. We were touched that you found our products to be good for your sensitive skin and happy to help with nice things to take home for yourself, friends & family.
Talk about easily distracted. I set out to write about something completely different but just felt the need to do a quick brain dump first.  What I would say that's closer to the topic is that it's pleasing to see customers taking advantage of our flat rate postage by placing more bulk orders.  We've noted that our 'box of tens' sales have really been growing and it makes total sense on so many fronts to purchase that way:
  • you save on freight buy buying in bulk
  • you save on price and packaging by buying bare
  • soap gets better over time - harder soap lasts longer
  • we pack efficiently, allowing us to keep our labour costs and pricing down
Our new nourishing lip balms have also been super popular over the dry winter. Blood Orange and Lavender are new favourites in our house but for those who like some freshness, spearmint is lovely and natural vanilla continues to be the 'go to' for many.

Read on to find out what we're up to these winter holidays.

Thanks to Margaret for the winning review for June.

Margaret loves our new Nourishing Face Oil (available in 15ml and 50ml sizes).
⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This product does what it says. I bought the smaller size to try and will continue to use it. My skin drinks it in, there's no residual oiliness or shine, a little goes a long way, and it doesn't have an overpowering aroma (which is very important to me). After a couple of weeks use with the Ivory Kaolin Clay · Rose Facial Cleanser, my skin tone and texture are more even and smooth.

At Washpool

Melissa, Emily & their family had a few days at Lennox Heads to recover from the massive weekend that was Finders Keepers. It was a great event & it was great to meet so many of our customers. It rained the whole beach holiday, which was lovely to see, but none of it made it over the Great Dividing Range to our place. There's been a bit of light drizzle about, but no rainfall recorded here at home.

It's school holidays here in Queensland this week and next (and next week overlaps with New South Wales holidays) so it's a very busy tourist time in our region. People from warmer areas love to visit to experience our colder temperatures and log fires. Snowflakes in Stanthorpe is on this weekend - it's a great trip for families if you'd like to see some man-made snow and do some ice-skating & lots of other wintery activities.

The Washpool Difference

Washpool is a small rural soaperie in Ballandean, Queensland. We believe in being small enough to listen and being big enough to deliver. We believe in hand made and we take pleasure in providing meaningful employment to people living in our rural community.

We take a minimalist approach to handcrafting our soap bars. Wholesome ingredients, purposefully selected. We believe that health comes first and beauty follows. Our
clients value authenticity, simplicity and purity.

Wherever possible, we choose to source our ingredients locally, often direct from the growers.  When we purchase ingredients from further afield we place great emphasis on using ethical, organic, fair trade and sustainably produced raw ingredients. Our packaging is biodegradable, recycled and recyclable where possible.

Our products include cold pressed edible oils,
butters and milks, extracts, infusions, activated and whole botanicals along with clays, honey, fruit and vegetables. Basically, ingredients
you can recognise, most of which are edible.
