New lip balm tins & we're on the road again

It's interesting that with the increase of people interested in the environment and sustainability that we often end up going back to the old ways. Reusing packaging was just a given decades ago when we didn't have our rubbish collected weekly (rural residents here don't have rubbish collection - we need to take our own waste to the dump which makes us much more aware of what we create).

We've spoken before about our journey to better choices for our products. We don't always get it right but we're taking steps in the right direction. It's pleasing to see our packaging suppliers are working towards more sustainable options. Demand is certainly having an impact on their research and development.

A few months ago we started making all our lip balms available in tubes (previously you could get some of them in small glass jars). The tubes were far more popular and easy to transport, however, they can't readily be recycled. (Just as a side note kraft lip balm tubes do not lend themselves to upscaling as they don't fit into filling trays, mark easily and are around ten times the price of a PET tube. Again we expect to see this improve with demand).

So, we've finally found a good alternative option - these cute retro slidey tins. Made from aluminium, they're completely recyclable, fit in your pocket & hold about twice as much lip balm as the tubes. Available in all five scents.

We enjoyed meeting so many of our new and loyal customers at the recent Brisbane Eco Expo. It was good to see the event growing and both a pleasure and inspiration to be amongst a crowd of like-minded individuals.

The winner of our Eco Expo prize draw was Miranda N from Carindale. Congratulations Miranda! Miranda won a $200 prize pack just for visiting us and signing up to our newsletter.

We'll be on the road again a few times before the end of the year. Keep an eye out for us if you live anywhere near:
  • Toowoomba - we'll be taking our soapmaking workshop on the road to the Green Dandelion store on Sunday 13 October. It's our last one for the year and the first time we've taken the show on the road. Handmade soap makes a great Christmas gift - by the end of the workshop you'll have around 20 bars of soap that you can gift to friends or family (or use yourself) and you'll have the knowledge to make more! Green Dandelion is one of our stockists and they stock a range of earth-friendly wares.
  • Brisbane - We'll be at the Brisbane Finders Keepers markets Friday 8 - Sunday 10 November. Great chance to do some handmade gift shopping. You'll be able to order online and pick up at the market to save on postage.
  • Toowoomba - We'll be sending our stock to the Toowoomba Bush Christmas exhibition from 27 November - 6 December. Bush Christmas is an annual celebration of outback creative talent which presents a magnificent collection of handmade gifts and gourmet delights each year.
  • Sydney - Long time no see! We're heading to the Sydney Finders Keepers this December 6-8. We're excited (and a little nervous) to be heading to the big big smoke just before Christmas. You'll be able to order online in advance and choose pick up to save on postage.
Phew! We'd better get making!

Cazz tried our Rosemary & Mint [Loofah Bar] [L1] & gave it 5 stars:

My favourite by far
Bought this when I visited Stanthorpe on a trip! Loved it so much I tracked these down online! Really refreshing!

Tip: Once the soap has been used, you can use the loofah as a soap rack to elevate and help dry your soap out between uses.

We got a lovely note & gift from Anticraft (our do rag supplier) as a rain dance and then got super excited when it rained that afternoon (for about a second, but enough to make us hopeful that it can still rain). There's a bit of rain predicted tomorrow - finger's crossed it delivers!

Our region has experienced a real downturn in visitors as people are cancelling or delaying their trip, due to the recent fires. At the same time we've had many people ask how they can help. Honestly, the best thing you can do to support our region is to visit or to support our online stores to help us keep going through this hard time. We're truly thankful that our customers think of us in these times. We had a huge outpouring of support after our last fire-heavy email. This is not charity but a beautiful exchange between people who love to share their region and products with those who value and appreciate it.

Upcoming recovery events:

The Granite Belt Christmas Farm is hosting the Stanthorpe Drought Fundraiser 2019 this Saturday 28 September. Lots of activities, music & raffles.

River 94.9 FM are also hosting a water drive and a fundraiser on Saturday 28 September at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds.

Thanks for your support!

If you call or visit you'll probably have spoken to or met Emily. Here she is modelling a do rag and a turkish scarf.

The second photo is her going above and beyond in customer service to demonstrate the different Luk lipsticks we have in store for a customer who called and couldn't decide what colour she liked most!

The Washpool Difference

Washpool is a small rural soaperie in Ballandean, Queensland. We believe in being small enough to listen and being big enough to deliver. We believe in hand made and we take pleasure in providing meaningful employment to people living in our rural community.

We take a minimalist approach to handcrafting our soap bars. Wholesome ingredients, purposefully selected. We believe that health comes first and beauty follows. Our
clients value authenticity, simplicity and purity.

Wherever possible, we choose to source our ingredients locally, often direct from the growers.  When we purchase ingredients from further afield we place great emphasis on using ethical, organic, fair trade and sustainably produced raw ingredients. Our packaging is biodegradable, recycled and recyclable where possible.

Our products include cold pressed edible oils,
butters and milks, extracts, infusions, activated and whole botanicals along with clays, honey, fruit and vegetables. Basically, ingredients
you can recognise, most of which are edible.
