In today's newsletter: The first frost and Mother's Day ideas.

First frost

Brrr! Winter is coming! We had our first frost of the year yesterday, with temperatures getting down to zero degrees. The arrival of the frosts has both positive and negative aspects to life in the country.

The positives: Layering up with a blanket, slippers and a glass of local red in front of the fire - heaven! It's also a time when we can reduce the amount of time spent in the garden & focus on doing those winter jobs and preparing for next year. It also means less watering as plants slow down and hibernate for the winter.

The negatives: Frosts stop many grasses and plants from growing. Not so great when we've had such a dry season and there's hardly any grass for stock and other animals.

We were grateful to receive another 6mm of rain over the weekend. If you've been adding up, that brings the official reading for our nearest town of Stanthorpe to 84.9mm since January 1 - as compared to an average of 335.1mm. We've actually had less than this at our farm, so we're in uncharted territory with so little water for livestock, family and the soaperie - all of which rely on stored tank and dam water.

Product Review

For deep moisturisation

I use this moisturiser for really dry areas eg knees, elbows, rough dry hands and cuticles etc. I also use it in winter as it provides deep moisture and keeps my skin soft. It is more 'work' to apply but worth it. I'm a huge fan of natural ingredients in beauty products and this one is a staple in my cabinet.

At Washpool

We're starting to make a comfrey oil infusion to use in a few new recipes. Step one is to pick, clean and dry it. We let it drip dry first and then put it in our dehydrator at a low temperature for a few hours. Next step is to infuse it in an oil for a few weeks. Then we can start using it in recipes.

The Washpool Difference

Washpool is a small rural soaperie in Ballandean, Queensland. We believe in being small enough to listen and being big enough to deliver. We believe in hand made and we take pleasure in providing meaningful employment to people living in our rural community.

We take a minimalist approach to handcrafting our soap bars. Wholesome ingredients, purposefully selected. We believe that health comes first and beauty follows. Our
clients value authenticity, simplicity and purity.

Wherever possible, we choose to source our ingredients locally, often direct from the growers.  When we purchase ingredients from further afield we place great emphasis on using ethical, organic, fair trade and sustainably produced raw ingredients. Our packaging is biodegradable, recycled and recyclable where possible.

Our products include cold pressed edible oils,
butters and milks, extracts, infusions, activated and whole botanicals along with clays, honey, fruit and vegetables. Basically, ingredients
you can recognise, most of which are edible.
