60 Minutes Nails Lumber Liquidators

As noted in the just-aired 60 Minutes report, certified tests show that Lumber Liquidators' Chinese-made laminate flooring has some of the highest formaldehyde levels that HPVA Laboratories® has ever seen. Some formaldehyde levels are more than six times above state standards. Employees in China admit to falsely labeling the company's laminate flooring. CEO Thomas Sullivan stated that Lumber Liquidators will investigate the excessively high formaldehyde levels.

Criminal Charges For Lumber Liquidators?

The U.S. Department of Justice may pursue criminal charges against Lumber Liquidators for importing illegally harvested wood. The company has been under federal investigation since 2013 when the Environmental Investigation Agency documented that Lumber Liquidators imported significant quantities of illegally-sourced Russian timber. Russian courts recently convicted a key Lumber Liquidators supplier of illegal harvesting. Senator Nelson of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation has also asked the federal government to investigate if the imported laminate poses a health risk.

Overseas Pests Killing Our Forests

Recent reports of the devastating effects on North American forests from predators like the emerald ash borer and spotted lanternfly highlight only part of the problem. Researchers report that another Asian invader, the hemlock woolly adelgid, has spread to about 50% of the range of the eastern hemlock and has been found in the Pacific Northwest.

Chinese Forest Products Flourish

Last year, the value of China’s forest products industry output grew to $848 billion and the value of its forest products trade reached $138 billion, increases of 11% and 9.5%. More troubling is the balance of U.S. imports from China compared to exports: up 7.5% for a deficit of over $342 billion. During each of the past five years, U.S. imports, exports and balance of trade with China have all increased
