| Home Forward Response to the COVID-19 State of Emergency |
As the COVID-19 public health crisis has unfolded over the last few weeks, Home Forward has taken a number of steps to help keep our residents, participants and staff safe. These include:
- Enacting a moratorium on evictions for nonpayment of rent for loss of income related to COVID-19, including the waiving of related late fees, until at least May 31, 2020. In the public housing and Housing Choice Voucher programs, we’re expediting interim reviews when people’s income drops, so the portion of the rent they pay is quickly reduced, and our subsidy increases to replace it.
- Implementing special cleaning protocols for the common areas of our properties, especially those that house seniors and vulnerable populations, and making sure there are plenty of cleaning supplies for the weeks ahead.
- Ensuring that staff who run out of sick leave can take paid administrative leave for up to two weeks, so they can care for themselves and their families, while not exposing others to illness.
- Eliminating in-person group meetings and community activities, except in cases of food distribution or other health-related services.
- Moving to essential operations only, starting Monday, March 23rd, until at least April 3rd. During this time, we will make sure critical services like payments to landlords, emergency repairs, and outreach to vulnerable residents continues. In the meantime, most of our staff will work at home, and all employees will continue to be paid at least their regular wages.
There are many partners and elected leaders in the community who are supporting our ability to respond to this crisis, and we are grateful. It’s a stressful time, and we are in a constant state of adaptation as we do our best to keep everyone as safe as possible. I want to especially thank the creative, dedicated staff of Home Forward who are giving everything they’ve got to get us through this.
