Baseball Field Improvements

At our last Public Works and Sustainability Committee meeting, Mayor Meghan George, School Board President Betsy Shaughnessy, Lakewood City Schools’ Assistant Superintendent Dr. Christine Palumbro, and Council discussed maintenance of Lakewood’s baseball fields. Unlike most cities, Lakewood’s Recreation Department is administered by the School Board. Currently, the School Board is responsible for maintaining the infields and the City is responsible for maintaining everything else. Over the past five years the City has invested $1 million on lighting, improving the dugouts, bleachers, and other items related to the maintenance of the baseball fields.

Since June, representatives from the George Administration, School Board, and Recreation Department have been meeting to create a Memorandum of Understanding to delineate the maintenance responsibilities more clearly. Mayor George informed Council that she is working with the School Board to prepare a Request for Proposals to improve Foxx Field at Kauffman Park.  My Council colleagues and I expressed our support of authorizing the funds necessary to improve all of Lakewood’s baseball fields.

Several members of the public expressed their dissatisfaction with the Recreation Department during the meeting. Unfortunately, City Council does not have any authority over the Recreation Department. If you have a complaint about the Recreation Department, please attend the Community Recreation & Education Commission meeting that is held on the last Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM at the Central Office at Taft located at 13701 Clifton Blvd.

Madison Park Improvements

Planning and Development Director Shawn Leininger informed City Council that the City will be making improvements to the South side of Madison Park to support additional activity and public gathering for the purpose of increasing visibility in the area. The improvements include court bleachers, new park grills, a drinking fountain, bike racks, and a sidewalk trail connection that will complete the park loop. I would like to thank the Planning and Development Department for working quickly to improve this important Lakewood asset.

Anti-Racism Task Force Vacancies

Lakewood City Council is seeking new members to join the City’s Anti-Racism Task Force. A successful applicant should be comfortable having candid conversations about race, demonstrate an understanding of systemic racism and have previous experience engaging in social justice issues, advocacy efforts, and/or community outreach.

Established in 2020, the Anti-Racism Task Force is a diverse group of 11 residents who work with the City to ensure that the value of anti-racism is foundational and unambiguously expressed in all city objectives such as safety, housing, education, culture, and community wellness.

The Task Force meets in the evening on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Service on this task force is voluntary without pay. Additional information about the Anti-Racism Task Force, including agendas and minutes, are located on the City’s website at: https://www.lakewoodoh.gov/accordions/anti-racism-task-force/ Applicants may email a résumé and cover letter OR application for consideration to Lakewood City Council c/o the Clerk of Council at council@lakewoodoh.net. The deadline for applications is Monday August 30th at 5:00 p.m.

Lakewood Arts Festival

Last Saturday, August 7th was one of my favorite events of the year, the Lakewood Arts Festival. The Festival features artists from across the country and funds student scholarships and grants to local art organizations. This year, Lakewood High School graduate Nola Williams-Riseng was the recipient of the Lakewood Arts Festival scholarship. Congrats Nola! Stop by Lakewood Public Library to see Nola’s impressive artwork.

A Special Welcome

My wife, Michelle, and I are excited to welcome the newest member of our family and the Lakewood community - Olivia Atalanta Shachner! Olivia was born on July 19, 2021, and is an absolute joy. We couldn't be happier!
