MEDIA RELEASE                   1 June  2021

Regional Plan and Budget revealed for 2021/2022

Following last Thursday's monthly Council Meeting, the Regional Plan was approved and is available for community consultation until COB Friday 18 June 2021.

The Regional Plan can be found as an online flip book here and a downloadable PDF here.

As a result of the plan being released, the Annual Budget has passed through council and is available as part of this consultation.

Some things of note in the forecast for the 2021/2022 financial budget include:
  • an operational budget of $28.388 million has been allocated for the year, including net/deficit carry over and any transfer from reserves ;
  • a total of $1.615 million has been contributed directly from Council for capital items
  • $7.643 million in funded projects scheduled for completion during the year;
  • 2% rates increase in line with similar council increases in the Northern Territory;
  • an increase of 6% to kerbside waste collection fees
"Although there is a noticeable rise in rubbish waste bin collection fees for the region, the Council has worked hard to ensure fee increases were to be kept to an absolute minimum. Unfortunately the capacity of our current Tennant Creek landfill site is full, and we have had to seek out additional land to keep up with the demand. It's not an easy choice but we hope the community understands that this is to keep the council amenities and services running, and not a profit-driven decision" remarked Chief Executive Officer of the Barkly Regional Council Steve Moore.

If you would like to find out more, or give feedback on the plan please email Council at reception@barkly.nt.gov.au; or call on 08 8962 0000.
