MEDIA RELEASE                   22 March 2021

More reasons to visit Lake Mary Ann

The Barkly Community has been gifted a new playground as part of the Turbocharging Tourism fund in conjunction with additional funds from Barkly Council’s Tennant Creek Local Authority. The $450,000 project includes a new undercover playground with soft-fall installed as well as upgraded shaded seating areas and undercover BBQ’s that will be installed in the coming months.

The community was given a chance to choose the design and input suggestions about the proposed equipment and a final design was voted on and created.

Adding this equipment increases the liveability of the region and will hopefully attract young families to the region and provide fond memories for the residents of The Barkly and Tennant Creek.

The site includes multiple slides, climbing areas and other engaging features for young people and the young at heart. Consideration has also been made for our differently abled, with an accessible ride that is designed for a wheelchair.

Mayor Jeff McLaughlin remarked "As the great philosopher Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) once said - Where do the children play?"

He continued "They play at the damn, Lake Mary Ann, Tingkkarli, that's where they play."

Thank you to the Northern Territory Government and Tennant Creek Local Authority for funding this project.
