MEDIA RELEASE                    15 January 2021

Bright Future for The Barkly

Acting Prime Minister Michael McCormack was in Tennant Creek to announce the Australian Government’s funding to undertake a development study into the establishment of a multi-modal facility and rail terminal at Tennant Creek. If found feasible the facility has scope to provide opportunities for industrial and logistics support for expansion of the agriculture, pastoral, mining and other industries.

The study will be exploring the feasibility and options for proceeding with the multi-modal facility through the investigation of land constraints, infrastructure needs and other items necessary for the facility. This may include a site for a future rail freight terminal to service the development of a Mt Isa to Tennant Creek rail link should one be constructed in future years.

The total cost of the development study into the establishment of a multimodal facility and rail terminal is $325,000 with the development study expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

Mayor Jeff Mcloughlin welcomed Acting Prime Minister Michael McCormack’s announcement which compliments the bright economic future of the Barkly region. He said “The Barkly regional economy has traditionally been led by the agricultural and mining sectors and innovation in the Agriculture sector. The Barkly is also starting to realise its strategic position as a central logistical hub, as well as its ability to produce clean, renewal able energy as we have one of the highest solar irradiance resources on the planet. Couple this with the economic development work being undertaken through the Barkly Regional Deal means the future is looking bright for the Barkly’.
