MEDIA RELEASE                   Friday 17 December 2021

COVID-19 Tennant Creek Lockdown Update

Following the announcement from the Chief Minister, around 11:30 am ACST the following mandates are in place for Tennant Creek;

Tennant Creek will enter into a lockdown immediately until 5pm on Monday, 20 December 2021. This is due to confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our community. Tennant Creek also has a low vaccination rate of below 70 percent first dose.

Residents must stay at home for the lockdown period and people are only permitted to leave for the following five reasons:

1. Medical treatment, including COVID testing or vaccination

2. For essential goods and services, like groceries and medications. Only one household member should visit the store, once per day

3. For work that is considered essential

4. For one hour of outdoor exercise a day within 5 km from your home with one other person or people from your house

5. To provide care and support to a family member or person who cannot support themselves. In case of an emergency.

Masks must be worn outside of the home.

Essential workers who are fully vaccinated or have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine can continue to go to work.

Non-residents in the Barkly LGA who wish to leave must get tested for COVID-19 and can apply to exit following a negative result.

All people who have been in Tennant Creek in the past seven days, since 10 December, must immediately isolate, get tested for COVID-19, and remain in isolation until they receive a negative result.

Those people who have since left the area and are in transit – must stop at the nearest COVID-19 testing facility. Anyone who has traveled interstate is highly encouraged to get tested for COVID-19.

People may not enter the lockdown area unless it is to access essential services, such as fuel, or to transit through.

A mask mandate will be implemented for the Barkly Local Government Area (LGA) until 5 pm on Monday, 20 December.

Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin reaffirmed this emphatically "This is one of the most important media alerts I have had to release to all the people of the Barkly. Most of us are getting ready for the holiday season, and have travel plans to spend time with our friends & families.

I know that Barkly residents are a resilient bunch and we will get through these testing times and comply with COVID-19 mandates for our region and the Northern Territory.

We need to ensure that we follow the directives put forward to us by the Chief Minister and the Chief Health Officer. Tennant Creek and Barkly – We have got this!

Mask Up – Get Tested – Look out for one another! Spread love, not the virus".
