Destination Sport 2012 has finally arrived! This year's annual Destination Sport festival is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever before, as it prepares to kick of this coming weekend. We are also celebrating National Bike Week over the next week with events taking place throughout the county as well as a number of bike shops offering free bike checks in Mullingar and Athlone. With so much to offer over the next few days make sure your put on your sporting gear and GET INVOLVED!!

Destination Sport Events Schedule 

Over the week a number of sporting events are to take place to celebrate sport and recreation in Mullingar                                      .

On Saturday, June 16th the Fighting Cancer Triathlon takes place in Belvedere House, Gardens and Park at 10am, on Monday, June 17th, Mullingar Tennis Club are hosting a free ‘Stay and Play’ session for adult beginners at 7.30pm and on Wednesday, June 20th local schools and businesses will be mounting their bikes for the National Bike Week ‘Bike to School/Work Day’. On Friday, June 22nd, the Waterways Ireland ‘Bridge to Bridge’ Schools Duathlon will take place on Harbour Bridge from 9am, later that evening the ‘Streets on Fire’ 5k Road Race takes place in Mullingar town park and on Saturday, June 23rd the Red Earth 5k walk takes place at 12am. The festival is also hosting a photography competition, as well as the on-street food and crafts fair ‘A Taste of Mullingar’, taking place on Sunday, June 24th.

A bus of a different kind for Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn 

Getting ready for school in the mornings is hectic enough when you are travelling by car but one teacher from Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn has taken it to a whole new level by introducing the ‘Bike Bus’. Muinteoir Ger Mulvihill pilots the bike bus daily, cycling the 4km route from her home to the school located on Ashe road. At first it started as a family cycle with her children who are pupils of the school however over the last four weeks the family cycle has turned into a fun, safe and active group cycle in which children join in and drop off at various points along the route.

Midlands Boccia League Finals

The final round of the Midlands Boccia League was played recently in Moate Community Centre. Since last October 28 teams have being competing in the league with the aim of accumulating enough points to ensure a semi final place.

To complete the league, each team in Division 1 and 2 had one last game to increase their position on the table, with many teams contending the top four positions. Following a tally of the ponts in Division 1, Fresh Start, Athlone Town, D'unbelievable and Green Dragons would contest the semi-finals, while in Division 2, N-Dubz, Offaly Tigers, Panthers and Rope Makers would battle for a place in the final.
