Design for Dance

Design for Dance

Performance   1 - 4 march |  Platform theatre
Design for Dance is a programme of original workshop dance pieces created by students on the Central Saint Martins BA Performance Design & Practice course, in collaboration with student choreographers and dancers from Central School of Ballet, London Studio Centre or Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance.

There are two separate shows. Each show will feature a selection of pieces from all three participating dance schools: 
Show A: Wednesday 1 and Friday 3 March at 7.30pm
Show B: Thursday 2 and Saturday 4 March at 7.30pm

Illustration Work In Progress Show

Exhibition  until 4 March | Menier Gallery (SE1 1RU)

See work that pushes the conventional boundaries – both analogue and digital – of illustration by our BA Graphic Communication Design Illustration pathway students. The works on show will range from paintings to prints, zines, books, films, sculpture and animations.

Under the Counter at the Royal Albert Hall

Under the Counter

Performance    Monday 6 mARCH, FROM NOON  |  Royal Albert Hall
Taking inspiration from the transformative counterculture era, students from the BA and MA Performance Design and Practice course, as well as students from Drama Centre London (Foundation Studies in Performance) will offer an international perspective on shifting cultural norms in Under the Counter – a unique promenade performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Journey around the Hall’s more unusual and often unseen spaces for a mix of live experiences and presentations that feature installation, theatre, music and much more.

Metaphonica III

Metaphonica III: songs of protest and resistance

Art, live music and politics collide for the third instalment of Metaphonica. For this year’s event expect an evening of experimental music that brings together established artists and emerging talent to give everyone the opportunity to scream at the current state of affairs.

Line-up highlights include: Penny Rimbaud 'OH AMERICA' , Ruben Green and Charismatic Megafauna

Altered Realities

Altered Realities

2017: What is going on? We stand at a hyperreal crossroads: a virtual reality in one direction, augmented dead ahead, and a post-truth, post-reality actualities another. Against this backdrop Altered Realities has been formed.

Comprised of works submitted via an open call to students, staff and alumni of Central Saint Martins, it comprises creative responses that acknowledge and respond to the altered states and twisted realities in which we find ourselves.

Somehow You and I Collide

Somehow You and I Collide (Art Programme MA Interim Show) showcases the work of over 70 CSM postgraduate art students. The students are all in the first year of their course, be it MA Art and Science, MA Fine Art or MA Photography.

BA Acting Production

BA Acting Production: Caucasian Chalk Circle

Performance    21 - 24 March |  Platform Theatre
In this celebrated classic, Brecht transforms a simple parable highlighting the conflict between the law and natural justice, into a brilliantly provocative dissection of capitalism, socialism, militarism, and motherhood. First produced in 1938, this recent translation by Alistair Beaton clearly demonstrates how relevant the central story, concerning the plight of a refugee remains today.

Annihilation Event

Exhibition    22 - 29 March | Lethaby gallery
This six day programme in the Lethaby Gallery will bring together a contrary group of artists, archivists, archaeologists, historians, technical experts and theorists from all over Europe. The scheduled events will operate as an experiment, an exchange, a chance to inhabit the Lethaby with a constellation of objects, machines, speculative processes and performances, an unprecedented opportunity for collisions and collusions.

To coincide with the exhibition, Fine Art will be displaying some of the photogrammetry work they have done with items from the CSM Museum and Study Collection. A Portolan Chart from 1570, an important item from the collection will also feature in the exhibition in the Lethaby Gallery alongside a photogrammetry version of it.

Orientation as Gardening

Exhibition   until 9 March |  THE CROSSING (CSM) AND ACROSS KING'S CROSS
Austrian artists Almut Rink and Carola Platzek explore the notion of “orientation” as an attempt to understand who we are. Eight Assemblage Boards, fragile wooden structures, have been installed in public spaces first in Tokyo, Japan, and now in and around King’s Cross. Every day, there will be a performative walk by theatre director Ursula Reisenberger exploring all the locations and putting them into context; you are welcome to join.

Six Branch is a collaboration between BA Textile Design students from Central Saint Martins and the Women in Hebron embroidery cooperative in Palestine. Here, contemporary design and traditional skills combine to cross borders with stitches.

David Usborne: The Art of Useful Things

An exhibition sourced from a collection of objects donated to UAL by David Usborne, a retired architect and teacher of design (formerly a lecturer in the history of design at the Central School , Southampton Row). The objects are utilitarian and anonymous and will be of interest to designers and sculptors both because of the puzzle of their function (which is not always obvious), and the elegance of their form.

This is a collaborative project which aims to celebrate the People of Colour (PoC) who study and work at UAL. The exhibition has been inspired by Rhian Spencer's Black Faces in White Spaces. Shades of Noir (SoN) will bring together portraits to draw emphasis to the diverse population of UAL, and more importantly, attention to the change makers within the institution.
