May 2020 Newsletter
Dear Friends,

April has been a long month for most of the world. Busy cities have become ghost towns. Businesses and governments have closed. People everywhere are wondering, when will we be back to normal?

We here in the public library are wondering the same thing. The library is not operating as normal, but it is operating. We are expanding our digital resources and online programming. We’re developing plans to provide curbside pickup for print materials, and even, someday, to slowly let people back into the building.
As the month draws to a close, there are signs of hope: the number of COVID-19 cases in Homer remains small, and social-distancing restrictions may be relaxed slightly. Of course, everything could change in an instant, but the community can take pride in knowing we’ve held the virus to a crawl so far.

On a happier note, this is also a special time for me. Today, April 22, marks my one-year anniversary as Director of the Homer Public Library. It has been an eventful year—learning the ropes of a new job and a new town, starting the endowment fund, getting to know the amazing people who live here. I feel honored to be a part of Homer, and I look forward to another successful year ahead!
Dave Berry,
Library Director

Reading Between the Lines
Reviewers Wanted

Have you ever wanted to promote a book, a recorded book, or other resource from our library?  We are looking for a few new voices to participate and round out our already outstanding group of RBL participants for the Reading Between the Lines program. The RBL is a weekly review segment which airs at 9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings on KBBI 890 AM radio. We are looking for people who are passionate about our library, library resources, and who like to share that passion with our friends and family in the Homer area.

The Friends of the Homer Public Library
sponsor the RBL program.

Things you might want to know…
  • Segments are recorded in advance, so if you are nervous about having to do this live on air, no worries! Matt at KBBI will work with you and re-record until you are happy with the results.
  • You can sign up for a one-off, or to become part of a regular rotating schedule of reviewers.
  • Need summers off, or are you gone snow birding for the winter? No problem!  We can accommodate your schedule.
  • At the moment with the Covid 19 virus we need to record our segments at home and send them as an email attachment to Matt. (I can walk you through this process)
If you would like more information or a copy of the RBL guidelines and general information notes please contact Jacqueline E. Peterson at RBLHomer@gmail.com

Writing Through the Pandemic has had a great response.  Check the library main webpage to see if a second session will be added in May.
Thank you to the Homer Foundation, specifically the KLEPS fund,  for their support of the Summer Reading and Learning Program, Summer@HPL. Thank you for valuing literacy and learning in our community!
Thank you also to all the individuals who supported Summer@HPL by purchasing a paper flower. Kids and families will stay reading, learning, and engaged thanks to your help!

BOOKMOBILE UPDATE

Stay tuned for the bookmobile’s summer schedule.  The library staff and Friends are working in tandem to establish a policy for distributing books with our bookmobile, BOB (Books on Board).

Rest assured that BOB is ready to roll when we have a system in place that assures everyone's safety. While our program may not look like it has in the past, we are dedicated to our mission to get books into the hands of all.
