Did you know? The inaugural Vancouver Marathon took place in 1972 and had 46 entrants, who each paid $1 to run.

The B.C. Park Amendment Act - What is Happening?

The Park Amendment Act (Bill 4) quickly and quietly passed legislation at the end of March.

The act has been controversial, since it leaves the future of BC's Provincial Parks - until now largely protected from industrial development - in jeopardy. The new legislation allows the B.C. government to issue permits for use of of B.C. Parks without the proof that those activities are necessary for the 'preservation or maintenance of the recreational values of the park' - which formerly was required.

This is even more concerning when you consider that last year it was uncovered the government is considering moving the boundaries of several B.C. Parks for industrial development (ie, nine parks could be affected by the Kinder Morgan Pipeline Expansion alone).

Much has been written about Bill 4 over the last month, so I won't go into detail here. The good news is that already over 160,000 people have signed a petition to repeal the bill (the goal is to reach 200,000). There is a great commentary on the Georgia Straight that lays out the issues, and has a link to the petition.
