VITA 5.2: Upgrades & New Features

Launching July 13, these new features will make your collections
lighter, brighter, and smarter!

Search & browse contributor names

New "Browse by Contributors" helps you showcase the people sharing their stories! Every name is also searchable!

YouTube video embed

All subscription sites can embed YouTube videos and add your own fuller, richer descriptions right in VITA and provide lighter, faster streaming video.

Upload JPG2000s for interactive views

Beautiful new page viewer means you can upload full images and pages as JPG2000 format for pan-zoom and rotation views. Perfect for detailed views or dense text like newspapers!

Carousel view for details

Display for multiple details has shifted to a carousel viewer for more intuitive navigation. Adding custom labels provides better information and are linked as part of the carousel menu!

And these too...

  • add an "order reproduction" button to your image screens (left)
  • new indexing template for faster, simpler data entry

All these changes are easy to use... see the updated (5.2) manuals in the

Spotlight on your indexes...

Indexes ...

Two significant index collections are now available online: London Free Press 1860-1880 and the
St. Catharines BMDs.

London Free Press Index Cards

London Public Library is digitizing and OCRing their community newspaper index cards. Recently, they made over 31,000 of these cards -- with full text -- available through their VITA site with plans for more to come! Browse the index cards here.

St. Catharines adds 54,000 BMDs

The St. Catharines Public Library has migrated their Birth, Marriage and Death records into VITA. This growing collection adds vital statistics that range from 1831-2015 and 16 publications. Check out the full collection here.

A story about genealogists...

Thanks to Karen Ball-Pyatt, we were invited to have a booth at the Kitchener Public Library 4th Annual Genealogy Fair on April 25. Jess Posgate spoke on searching family history using the ODW services. We were really impressed by the number of people who came and had so many questions. Wow! People loved it!

Genealogists are great at searching and they want fast, free access to family history: this is where VITA collections really deliver! Furthermore, genealogists love to share information. The "aha" moment for us is that all of us -- ODW, VITA users, and the public -- need to promote your local history collections as fast, free and fabulous.

Upcoming changes to VITA client support

This summer, we are undertaking some changes at ODW in how we provide our client support. As part of this transition and starting July 1, please direct all of your toolkit support questions—toolkit workflows, software issues, subscription questions, etc—to and someone will get back to you.

Training sessions will resume scheduling in the fall. Also in the fall of 2015, we plan to make other support tools available such as a how-to wiki of VITA Toolkit workflow questions, training videos and more peer support options.

Thanks for your flexibility!
