Networking Tips


Mark Hiatt, CEO of Business Leads of America, Inc., and who runs the Networking Portland group on Linkedin writes in Your Networking IQ about 10 people he believes you must have in your network. In this article he focuses on some of the members of a successful network that don’t get as much press, but that are vital to your success. Included in Mark's list are:
  • Your Industry Expert
  • Your Life Coach
  • Your Brainstormer
  • Your "Therapist"
  • Your Networker
And five others. See who they are in the full article by Mark.

Andy McClure, who runs Sherpa Business Development, has some advice for us on 14 ways to get referrals from our local networks. Divided into three categories -- visibility, credibility and profitability -- Andy lists these hints among the fourteen:
  • Circulate information about events they’re hosting
  • Interview them for a blog post or video post
  • Refer to their blog posts in ours
  • Refer their social media profile to others
  • Endorse them on social media
  • Comment on their blog posts or social media updates
  • Provide a testimonial they can post on a website
There are another seven tips in the full article by Andy.

Frank Agin, writing in AmSpirit Business Connections, has some great things to say about becoming the person you want to network with. He posits that to become successful in networking you need to become the person you want to network with, which he calls Foundational Networking.

With Foundational Networking, there are three categories of attitudes and habits you need to consider:
  • Presence
  • Altruism
  • Integrity

Like your online social media, your face-to-face networking will only be effective if you do it consistently. Initially pick only two or three groups of your target audience to visit and concentrate on going regularly. You can find relevant groups on the Calendar and Resources pages.Have a tip to share? Social Media Tips


Lori, producer of the Famous in Your Field website, writes in a recent article about  Adding Your E-mail Opt-in to Your Linkedin Profile so that you can get leads directly from Linkedin. The process involves creating projects on your Linkedin profile. Lori explains how LinkedIn gives you the ability to add and edit different sections on your profile, including a section called Projects.

Here’s how to make it happen:
  1. Go to your LinkedIn profile. At the menu, click on Profile > Edit Profile. If you don’t already have the section titled Projects on your profile, you’ll see a menu of new sections to add to your profile, displayed on the right part of the screen. (Hint: Look for the big “Recommended for You” headline with arrow.)
  2. If you already have the Projects section on your profile, you’ll go directly to that section and click on the Add+ button. Follow the prompts.
  3. Answer the series of questions that LinkedIn asks to create a clickable headline for your “project.” This might be your newsletter title, or your irresistible free offer.
Few LinkedIn users feature projects on their profiles at all, let alone use it gain fans for their business. But you can take advantage of this capability to build your email list directly from LinkedIn. There are more detailed instructions and hints in Lori's full article here.

In Business2Community author Jeff Bullas talks about 7 Tips for the Perfect Facebook Post. The formula, according to Jeff, is as follows:
  1. Post copy. Keep it short and sharp and less than 90 characters or make sure that you if you have a URL include it near the top of that text.
  2. Call to action. You need to include a URL in your post copy that drives your audience either deeper into Facebook, your blog or website.
  3. Target your Post. If you are targeting a country, language or audience then make the post relevant and specific for them.
  4. Timely promotion. Want to reach a bigger audience?… then run it as a “sponsored story” on Facebook within 24 hours of posting.
  5. Image Upload. Make it at least 300×300 pixels and use an image that has high impact. 
  6. Mobile first. Facebook is very often viewed on a mobile.
  7. Engage.

In this issue we excerpt from 50 Unbelievable Facts about the Earth from Memolition.

1. Total cost of the International Space Station, the most expensive object ever built, is $150 billion.

2. The furthest distance a picture of the earth has been taken from is 3.7 billion miles. The picture is known as the "Pale Blue Dot."

3. The amount of time a human being can survive unprotected in space is 2 whole minutes.

4. There are not 24 hours in a day. There are 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds -- the time it takes the Earth to rotate on its axis (called a sidereal day).

5. China's air pollution is visible from space. The Great Wall is not.

6. The number of man-made objects that have orbited the earth since the launch of Sputnik in 1957 is more than 38,000.

7. Earth is smoother than a bowling ball. High mountains and deep oceans make up only 1/5000th of the earth's circumference.

8. The ozone hole is shrinking. In 2012, the hole in the layer was smaller than it has ever been for the last 10 years.

9. The value of the earth's atmosphere based on the price of carbon dioxide is $6.5 quadrillion or $0.02 per cubic meter.

10. Rare earth elements are not that rare. Lutetium, the least abundant rare earth element, is nearly 2oo times more common in the earth's crust than gold.

11. Earth is the only planet in our solar system with plate tectonics. Without them, carbon wouldn't be consumed and recycled and the Earth would overheat (just like Venus).
