Networking Tips

My friend Jim Teasley, who I mentioned in last month's issue, is a man who networks frequently and successfully here in Portland.  He has written often about networking and his June 30 article in particular has a wealth of advice for networking successfully and building your business as a result. Some excerpts:

"You are not at a networking meeting to sign a new client. You are there to market, not to sell. You are sewing seeds that will one day grow into a garden. Market, exchange contact information, and follow up. Get to know those whom you meet as people, not as prospects or referrals. You will do business with people that you know, like, and trust. Do the marketing right, and the sales will follow."

"Be prepared to market yourself and your business at every networking meeting. Be ready to deliver a 15 second, 30 second, 1 minute, 3 minute, or 5 minute summary of what you want to say. If you cannot take all the time allowed, ask for questions. Be professional no matter how much or little time you have. Just enough information to get others to ask for more data is sufficient. Do not give a long presentation."

Like your online social media, your face-to-face networking will only be effective if you do it consistently. "Set up a personal social media account on the major social media platforms. You’re building your own digital/social media footprint. Include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and Pinterest."

"Become known as a resource. Help others on social media by paying-it-forward."

Also from Social Media Examiner is information on the use of the new hashtag feature recently announced by Facebook. In the article 4 Ways Marketers Can Use Facebook Hashtags you'll find information on expanding your reach, amplifying your brand, crossing social platforms and promoting specials and events. All good information.

In this issue we feature some fun facts about August courtesy of Ten Facts.

The birth flowers for August are gladiolus (see picture) and the poppy (Papaver).

In 8 BC Sextilis (sixth month) as it was then, was renamed in honor of first Roman Emperor Augustus.

The month was also lengthened from 30 days to 31 so that Augustus's month equalled Julius Caesar's July.

In the United States, it is National Goat Cheese Month.

August's birthstones are peridot and or sardonyx.

It is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and is one of seven months to contain 31 days.

A month long collection of arts and cultural festivals take place in Edinburgh, Scotland every August.

There are more vacations and holidays taken in this month more than any other.

In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere.
