  In Rembrance of Those Lost  in remembrance September 11, 2001

         

  It has been eleven years to the day since a crazed bunch of lunatic fanatics attacked America, killing thousands of innocent people and costing the lives of hundreds of first responders. Even all these many years later, the images from that morning are clearly imprinted on my mind. I was in our home preparing to go to work when my wife called me to the television in our bedroom. We sat transfixed as the disaster unfolded in real time and in living color. What a complete and ultimately futile attack on our beloved country by a group of terrorists led by a thankfully now dead Osama bin Laden. Yes, he cost us a lot of lives. And a lot of money. And got us involved in some wars that are still hurting our economy. But he never hurt our spirit.

As an Army veteran myself, I empathize with and support our troops.  The thousands who have given their lives, the tens of thousands who have given their limbs and the hundreds of thousands of support men and women in our armed forces. Thank you, people, from the bottom of my heart, for your service. Your efforts are appreciated and they help me, at least, to know that no one can ever destroy the spirit of the American people. We will never forget. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.

This Issue's Networking Tips

I've picked two interesting articles written by Forbes Technology Blog contributor Andy Ellwood. I'm not sure I agree completely with either of them,  but they both have interesting insights. 

While most people would tell you that they believe business cards in their current physical form are on their way out, no one has really cracked the code on what will replace them. Check out Why I Only Carry One Business Card for his approach to getting contact information from others via a follow-up phone call instead of simply exchanging business cards with each person ou meet.

Andy also says that walking into a large room of strangers alone and having a good time is not always the easiest thing to do. He's been doing it for his entire career and flying solo to an event still takes a little mental pep talk. But, with a little strategy and just a touch more hustle than normal, he says it can be as good for you as it is for them. Like your online social media, your face-to-face networking will only be effective if you do it consistently. This issue we spotlight Matthew Ives, Chief Operating Officer for Preferati. Matthew is an expert at web and cloud based solutions to vexing business problems that aren't necessarily website or mobile application related.

His company provides cutting edge web applications and implementation services. He works with his clients to customize their CRM systems, for example, and to integrate their various software systems into much more usable configurations. He also does work related to databases, e-commerce and other web applications. He also does regular website design, but his forte is really the custom work.

Did You Know... 

Normally we'll put either some interesting facts or an answer to a question from a reader in this space.

Do you know what color is most likely to result in a sale? Which color is associated with wealth? How about colors to avoid when trying to target certain global markets? All of these questions – and more – are covered in the science of color. Here are some fascinating facts from The Secret Science of Color and Social Media Sales:

  • Black – Sleek, sophisticated. A good choice for luxury items but must use with caution to avoid the idea of death or morning.
  • Green – Long associated with wealth, green is more than just the color of money…it’s also the easiest color for the eyes to actually process. Green is increasingly associated with sustainable, energy conservation and/or organic options as well as relaxation. A word of warning is needed when working with green…it is also the color of envy and nausea so select the color choice carefully!
  • Pink – The color of fun and femininity, pink is more than just pretty…it’s a tad funky, spontaneous and of course “bubble gum” young.
  • Blue – Traditionally associated with the male gender, blue is also used to convey strength and stability. However, blue is a fairly complex color with innumerable variations ranging from deep and dark to light and airy. To use blue most effectively requires attention to detail.

According to Tami Wessley in Business2Community, creating credible content should be the number one activity of every marketer today. She says that its impact is directly correlated to SEO/SERPs, brand reputation and interest and, most importantly, leads conversion. Also from Business2Community, Amy Izzo writes about the Nine Habits Of Highly Engaging Content Marketers. In her article, she provides some great tips (or “habits”) for keeping your content relevant, interesting, and engaging so that readers come to know you as a resource and keep returning to devour more information.

And finally from Business2Community this issue, Mike Mintz shares with us his take on Internet Marketing Basics: What Great Marketers Do. He cites three points from Seth Godin's list that should serve as guideposts for anyone looking to do great marketing, especially in the realm of social media.
