In this issue:  New events, new article links, a social media tip and more.

Welcome to Jon Turino ConnectionsTM
Volume 1, Number 2  May 1, 2012

Thank you so much!

This is the second issue of our new newsletter. The first issue, published on April 17th, was by all measures a big hit and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you who read it and especially to all who took the time to make comments and suggestions.

One of the comments we saw most often dealt with the line spacing of this text.  We used MailChimp's "normal" option in the first issue and it was a little tight.  We think 1-1/2 spaced is too much, so in this issue we've used the "slight" option.  But we're open to more feedback.  If this is still a little too "packed" to read easily, let us know and we'll go to the 1-1/2 line spacing option in the next issue.

As with the first issue, near the top you'll find this issue's networking tip and a partial list of networking events from my website Calendar page in which you might want to participate.  Toward the middle you'll find a social media tip, a Favored Affiliate spotlight and some interesting statistics in the "Did You Know..." section.  Near the bottom you'll find articles and groups of interest and a partial list of the latest updates on the website Resources page.

All of the content contains live links to the source information so that you can get to it quickly and easily.

We'll say again what we said last time:  Your feedback on this newsletter is very important to us.  Do we have the right topics?  The right content?  The right amount of information?  The right format?  What can we do better?  What's missing?  What don't you want?  Would paid ads or sponsored links be OK or not?  Please let us know via our website Contact page.

Thank you so much for reading and we'd really appreciate it if you'd confirm your desire to continue receiving this newsletter and other occasional emails from us by subscribing.  Also please do share this newsletter with your friends.

And if you want some help in growing your business, remember that Jon is a top notch marketing strategist, a power networker and a free information and referral resource here in Portland.
This Month's Networking Tip

Is your business card ready for networking?

It is not if you are (1) not paying much attention to the venerable old business card, or (2) getting so enamored with its design as to render it unreadable or (3) going so high-tech that it could be useless to its intended audience.

A business card needs to have certain basic elements.  These would normally include the name of the business, the tag line if applicable, the name and title of the person whose business card it is, the information on where that person’s business is located – either physically or on the web – and complete information on how to contact that person by all means available.  It might benefit from an image or a background, or it might not.  It really depends on the business and the intended audience.

You can read more on this topic, and others, at Jon's blog.
This Month's Social Media Tip

Not sure which social media sites you should spend time on?  Our friend Ed Bejarana of WebEd.Me has this -- and more! --  to say about that:  Ask five different social networking guru’s this question and you’ll get six to ten different answers.  The correct answer is simple:

Use as many social networking channels as your schedule will allow. Of course you’ll need to push yourself a little. All too often I hear business owners discount social networking because they don’t have the time. Your choice is to make time or watch your competition pass you by.

If you have a tip to share in a future issue, please use the Contact form to send it.

Did You Know...

Normally we'll put either some interesting fact or an answer to a question from a reader in this space.

Since we didn't have a question from a reader for this issue, here are some interesting statistics about blogging from Danny Brown, author of The Parables of Business.

 - 77% of Internet users read blogs.
- There are currently 133 million blogs listed on leading blog directory Technorati.
- 60% of bloggers are between the ages 18-44.
- One in five bloggers update their blogs daily.
- Two thirds of bloggers are male.
- Corporate blogging accounts for 14% of blogs.
- 15% of bloggers spend 10 hours a week blogging.

- Bloggers use an average of five different social sites to drive traffic to their blog.

Please message us via the Contact  page with your questions or "Did you know..." items. They're fun to read and make great conversation starters at networking events.
Articles of Interest

It's hard to choose from the huge volume of material provided by so many contributors on the web.  Some of the best posts, like this one on the new Google+ Share button, are in Social Media Today

But we also like these two articles as well -- one from The Next Web and one from Inc. magazine.

Google bumps up Gmail storage to 10GB to celebrate the launch of Google Drive.

Mind your manners because etiquette is not dead!

And one more from Mashable on tips for effective social media contests.

If you find other articles that you think might be of interest to readers of this newsletter, please let us know and we'll post them on Jon's Facebook business page, LinkedIn company page and Twitter account between issues of the newsletter.

Groups of Interest

Myriad virtual groups exist on the Internet and within Facebook, LinkedIn and MeetUp in particular.  Here are a few we think might be of interest to you.  You can join these groups to stay up to date on their activities and many also hold physical meetings on a regular basis.
