The theme of this year’s edition, taking place from August 22-28, 2016, will be “Contemplative Training: from Physiological Plasticity to Societal Changes" and features again a unique selection of top quality speakers from the fields of contemplative science and practice, including contemplative scholars, clinicians, change experts etc.
Drawing on research in both the sciences and the humanities, including neuroscience, psychology, clinical psychology, anthropology, philosophy, religion, and contemplative studies, this European SRI will investigate processes of change arising from mental training as practiced in the contemplative traditions. POWER & CARE - a Mind & Life Dialogue with His Holiness

"Power & Care" is not only a unique conference because of its special content spanning many academic disciplines and worldviews. Also its format is unique, by using art and creativity interwoven into the dialogues.
This will activate different levels of reflection and learning in the participants, beyond merely the cognitive mind, engaging the whole person and unleashing emotion and passion.
For example Birdheart, a hauntingly beautiful show involving paper puppets, will be held on the first evening of "Power & Care". Julian Crouch and Saskia Lane, creators and animators of the show, explain how the show works and the deep symbolism it reveals. Julian Crouch is an independent director, designer, writer, maker, teacher, illustrator and musician, whose career has spanned theatre, opera, ballet, film and television. Saskia Lane is a Julliard-trained bassist, composer, performer and educator.
What is Birdheart?
The show tells a story of man’s relationship to the world. An egg lies on the sand, and from the egg is born a large sheet of crumpled brown paper. The sheet of paper begins a slow transformation pulling elements from the sand; different hands, feet, heads - eventually becoming different figures. We build these live on stage and so the audience, as they witness each new incarnation, become part of the actual creative process as the show evolves. Our belief in the images, along with their belief, brings to life what began as something so simple.

ENCECON
European Neurophenomenology, Contemplative Neuroscience, and Embodied Cognition Network (ENCECON) first edition will be held from 6-10 June, 2016, in France. The ENCECON initiative aims to support European scientists engaged in empirical and theoretical research on embodied cognition, contemplative neuroscience, and neurophenomenology.
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM FOR CONTEMPLATIVE STUDIES
Mind & Life Institute will host an ISCS from November 10-13, 2016, in San Diego. The ISCS seeks to encourage and help shape a cohesive interdisciplinary field of contemplative studies in which basic and applied science, scholarship, education, the arts, and contemplative traditions collaboratively develop an integrated way of knowing.
