Blindspot Report

Week of Mar 3 - Mar 9

The weekly Blindspot Report from Ground News puts a spotlight on news that publications from one side of the political spectrum or the other had little to no reporting on.

If your politics lean left, you probably didn’t hear that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi considers sexual harrassment allegations against NY Gov. Cuomo 'credible'. And if your politics bend to the right, you likely didn't hear that a new study by New York University shows that far-right misinformation on facebook gets twice as much as left or center false stories.

This Week's Blindspots

Blindspot for the Left:

BrahMos missiles' supply: India signs key pact with Philippines for sale of 'defence equipment' India on Tuesday signed a key pact with the Philippines for the sale of "defence material and equipment", which are likely to include BrahM. The Philippines would be India’s first client for its missile system, and is likely buying them to protect against China's advances in the South China Sea. Blindspot for the Right:

Basic income payments increased full-time employment in California study An effort by Stockton, California to provide basic income payments to some 125 residents ended last month with officials recording rising levels of full-time employment among the study's participants after one year. The program was the highest-profile experiment in the U.S. of a universal basic income, where everyone gets a guaranteed amount per month for free. Blindspot for the Left:

Nancy Pelosi calls Cuomo sexual harassment allegations 'credible' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi broke her silence Sunday almost 24 hours after a second woman brought sexual harassment allegations against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “The women who have come forward with serious and credible charges against Gov. Cuomo deserve to be heard and to be treated with dignity,” Pelosi said in a statement to Fox News. Blindspot for the Right:

Texas patrons threaten to call ICE on Mexican restaurant for keeping mask mandate A group of patrons at a Mexican restaurant in Texas have threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on employees over their refusal to work maskless, according to the establishment's owner. Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott announced he was easing statewide COVID-19 restrictions by rescinding the mask mandate and allowing any business to operate at 100% capacity. Businesses, however, are able to decide if they want to keep their own mask requirements in place, which is leading to backlash from customers. Blindspot for the Left:

Gay poly throuple makes history, lists 3 dads on a birth certificate The family spent more than $120,000 on legal fees, contracts, implantations and tests to have their two babies. The three men have all been together for more than eight years and say they fought to get all three of their names listed on the birth certificates to protect their parental rights and the rights of their children. Disinformation Spreads Quicker When It’s Far Right A group of researchers at New York University have shown that left-leaning and centrist news publications get fewer clicks on Facebook if they publish false stories. But far-right publications experience the opposite, getting nearly twice as much Facebook engagement on stories classified as misinformation. Methodology

Ground News processes over 30,000 news articles each day. Articles from different news outlets covering the same news event are merged into a single story so subscribers can get all the perspectives in one view. Each article is labeled one of seven bias ratings (Far Left, Left, Leans Left, Center, Leans Right, Right, Far Right) based on the average bias rating of the publishing news outlet. All news outlet bias ratings are originally sourced from three independent news monitoring agencies (AllSides, Media Bias Fact Check, Ad Fontes Media).

The Blindspot Report is generated by evaluating the mean and standard deviation of the aggregate bias ratings of the week's top 100 (most covered and most read) stories. News stories with the greatest mean score (many more Right outlets than Left or vice versa) or the highest standard deviation of bias ratings (more coverage on fringes than Center) are selected for the Report.
