At least 150 people died in shootings across the US over Fourth of July weekend
At least 150 people were killed by gun violence in more than 400 shootings over the holiday weekend. In New York, there were 26 victims from 21 shootings from Friday to Sunday. In Chicago, 83 people were injured and 14 killed in shootings from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a. m. Monday.

Police group says ambush attacks on officers up 91 percent over past year
The National Fraternal Order of Police found that 51 law enforcement officers were shot, 13 of whom died, in 40 ambush-style attacks as of June 30. The group is warning against what it is calling a "surge in violence against the brave men and women of law enforcement". In all of 2020, there were 48 ambush- style attacks, which left 60 officers wounded, 12 fatally.

St. Louis city and county sue to block new Missouri gun law
St. Louis and adjoining St. Louis County filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block Missouri's new law barring state and local authorities from enforcing federal gun laws, saying the law would increase the risk of gun violence in a state already drowning in it.

'If you love your country, you're probably on the right': NY Times panned after suggesting US flag now represents conservatism
The New York Times published a report that portrayed displaying the American flag as controversial because of how much conservatives embrace the national emblem. The report noted that a recent survey by YouGov found that 66% of Republicans said they associated the flag with their own party while only 34% of Democrats said the same. Donald Trump Jr. tweeted: “How many days till these clowns start saying anyone flying the American flag is a racist?”

Up to 100 turtles and 20 dolphins have washed up dead on Sri Lanka’s beaches in the past month. Experts fear a link to the leak of toxic chemicals from a sunken freight ship. Government officials say the necropsies carried out so far have not been conclusive, and have commissioned further tests.

Target, Walgreens close early due to thefts in California stores
Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento are among the cities with the most organized retail crime in the country. As a result, stores have been closing early or permanently shuttering. Target has temporarily reduced its operating hours in six San Francisco stores. Walgreens has also closed several stores with some security guards reportedly told not to engage with shoplifters.

France to legalise IVF for lesbians after two-year debate
French parliament passes bioethics bill to give all women under 43 access to IVF. Until now, the technology was restricted to heterosexual couples where one partner was infertile. Single women and lesbian couples often traveled to Spain, Belgium or Denmark to have children. The bill also loosens rules on egg and sperm freezing, previously only allowed for donation purposes.
