Jamaica plans to seek reparations from Britain over slavery
Jamaica was key to the Spanish and then British involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. The National Library of Jamaica estimates around 600,000 African slaves were shipped to the island. A petition was brought to the Jamaican government by lawmaker Mike Henry that requested £7.6 billion in compensation.

Afghanistan on brink of humanitarian crisis-UN refugee agency
An estimated 270,000 Afghans have been newly displaced inside the country since January 2021. Many have reported interruptions to social services and a loss of income due to rising insecurity. The number of civilian casualties has risen 29 per cent during the first quarter of this year compared to 2020. Iran and Pakistan host nearly 90 per cent of displaced Afghans.

58% Of Voters Agree: Media Are ‘Enemy of the People’
Fifty-eight percent of likely voters either strongly agree (34 percent) or somewhat agree (24 percent) with the statement that the “media are truly the enemy of the people,” according to a survey conducted this week for Rasmussen Reports by Pulse Opinion Research. The survey also asked: “How serious of a problem is ‘fake news’ in the media?” Eighty-three percent of likely voters said it was either “very serious” (55 percent) or “somewhat serious” (28 percent)

U.S. chose not to prosecute 82% of hate-crime suspects from 2005
The U.S. Department of Justice declined to prosecute the vast majority of hate crime suspects from 2005 to 2019, according to a newly-released report. The report noted that federal prosecutors conducted preliminary investigations into 1,878 suspects who were allegedly involved in potential hate crime cases. The Justice Department only opted to move forward with prosecution in 17% of the cases.

Antony Blinken Warns U.S. Will Come to Philippines' Aid If China Attacks Aircraft, Ships
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. will come to the Philippines' aid if China attacks its aircrafts or ships. The statement came on the anniversary of a 2016 international tribunal ruling in support of the Philippines that rejects China's maritime territorial claims outside of its internationally recognized waters. China denounced the tribunal ruling on Monday, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian calling it a "political farce".

U.S., Canada Heatwave ‘Virtually Impossible’ Without Climate Change, Study Finds
The chance of temperatures in the Pacific Northwest region coming close to 50°C (122°F) has increased at least 150-fold since the end of the nineteenth century. The record-breaking heatwave lasted from 25 June to 1 July. More than 500 excess deaths and 180 wildfires were recorded in the western Canadian province of British Columbia.
